There are many people who seem to get by without a fan, or fit an electric fan and others who suggest that the viscous fan is too far back to be much use.
I'm not too sure about the latter, but when you are sitting in heavy traffic during one of our infrequent heat-waves, it is nice to know that there is something under the bonnet dragging a bit of air from behind the radiator.
When I did my conversion I was going to fit an old VW Golf electric fan to my 110, for no better reason than I had one in the garage. After hours of faffing about trying to decide how to mount it, I came to the conclusion that I was in danger botching up something that was going to look a little bit ****e.
The viscous fan looks like a factory fitment, it comes free with most tdi engines and is simple. As i said previously, it just brushes the four bolt steering box, but it sort of "self adjusts" and 1 or 2mm soon wears off the corner of the fan blades.

Did you say that it needs Defender drop arm ? and different pipe fittings ?
 
You need a Defender drop arm as Defenders have the ball joint in the drop arm whereas the Discovery has the ball joint attached to the drag link for some strange reason.
The steering dampers are also in different locations, so you could use a Discovery drop arm with a Discovery drag link, but you would also have to use a Discovery track control arm to re-locate the damper. (If that makes sense.)
I'm not sure about the PAS pipes, but do know that not all have the same unions. The parts book may have the answer.
