A thought occurs that Tim and I had been musing over trying to repair his by welding .. taking time to do it right, careful filing and fettling to fit it properly etc, as a last resort, to try and resurrect his spare.

Tbh paul I don't think even with the best will in the world it would be a successful repair

Tremendous shock loads down there, don't think id fancy chancing my weekend or sometimes my life on a dodgy diff.

If Tim's end is the opposite break that's awesome, otherwise hoping US quotes me happy :)

Yeah, I think that's why we had been thinking it over .. ;)

Have been talking with disco mark about the potential of having one turned up from billet

Im gonna ask the question locally

Just had an email from mark at LRO saying they've had to drop the mag feature because it's already been in another mag a few years back.

**** man! :(

Drop him a reply with a link to this thread. 160,000+ views and they don't want it in an article - madness.

Some LRs have been in at least four times - like this one.

So, got a quote of £260 to repair the current 10 spline obsolete ARB.

I don't think it's worth putting that kind of money into it, so 24 spline back axle with Ashlocker it is then.

Won't be in a hurry by the way because I am poor :p

Could you not get a mate with a lathe to turn it out from the centre then TIG weld in a new piece ?

Tbh pal I'm not in the mood for ####ing about.

Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten IMO and I'm not interesting in dodging some hard times now for the sake of breaking it in the middle of nowhere and having a bastard getting it home.

Ok it's a low tech vehicle and certain things can be bodged unlike a track car but with something as important as this I don't see the value in saving a few hundred quid vs many years of reliable enjoyment.

Has always been a worry if I break these obsolete diffs so now I'm taking the opportunity to move up the ladder!

You jammy bugger you:D:D

Well picked her up on Saturday and she truly is 'as advertised' !

There is almost no rust and what there is, I can deal with. She drives extremely well.

Curiously she has had a replacement injection pump fitted, but it was a non-EDC pump, which will allow me to do the pump mod !!!!

Literally everything does work - windows/locking/seats etc etc

So having given her an oil and filter change, plus good check-over, she is now ready for the return trip.

Would like to see some pics of no rust disco

So far have only been able to imagine!

It makes me quite moist to think about factory build land rovers with all bright plated fittings and gloss black paint

Oh how things have changed, I want me a ####ing time machine!

So.

Here's the 'general status of affairs' update.

Looks like the disco will miss this winter.

Have collected the first fiew pieces of the puzzle:

9B94E783-77CD-4B30-8A7F-C6B998470536.jpg

Original LR chrome balls that do not/should not break.

These will be built into early (with the drain and level holes to use ep90 not swivel grease) 24 spline swivel hubs kindly provided by Mark L.

The 24 spline hubs are to accept late 110 vented discs and calipers.

To these will be mounted FRC4320 stub axles to accept AEU2522 cvs and my original 10spline disco hubs that will run wet without stub axle seals.

I am collecting a pair of early 90 axles tonight that will hopefully provide me with original LR AEU2522 cvs, these are from a friendly LZ member who has hung into them for ages whilst I've been trying to get down to his house to collect them.

Having never been inside early defender axles I will be keen to see exactly what they contain and what parts will be salvageable from them.

Anyway, from Ashcroft will be an air locker, their 24/23 front shafts and their 5608/M drive flanges.

Dave at Llama4x4 will provide braided brake hoses throughout the vehicle from master cylinder to bias valve and to all four corners. Gone are the days of hard pipe for me :)

At the rear it is simpler, we will see an Ashlocker with ashcroft's early type 24/24 shafts which are longer than original 24 spline shafts as they are designed to work with the longer 10 spline stub axles. These stub axles will most likely be FRC4320 at the rear also as they are surprisingly cheaper than stock disco 10 spline rear stubs. The brass portion will simply be unfitted/unused. Ashcrofts 5608/M drive flanges will be on the rear also, specific to 10 spline disco hubs.

As such I will use my original disco 10 spline hubs, new discs and new 300tdi rear calipers, supplied with fluid by braided hose of course.

All in all it's going to be bloody expensive and this is not something I am looking forward to.

The car is on show at Donny in Feb so I hope to have it built by then but with stock diffs in just to drive it to the show and back, as there is over a grand to find for Ashcroft diffs and pegged casings from Nige at Megasquirt which is not the sort of thing people like me find down the back of the tv!

Will be a fun build though and plenty of pics/info as usual :)

And after all that there's an onboard air system to build (I already have a Britpart twin piston compressor that I don't use and really should) so I will be selling my ARB air locker and compressor as a kit and making an OBA 120psi system with regulated supply for the air lockers and then I can use air tools out of the car and blow my tyres/air bed up quickly :)

LOTS to do!
