Mmmmm shiney :D

you fitted a fender box???? or changed the gearing???? I have a disco box here thinking of fitting it and getting the 1.4 fender box reconned. if I can find the dosh. :(

Yeah it's a 22D suffix C out of an old 90

Straight swap basically, just had to change a few studs etc to mount to the main box.

Mines a 300 110 and the disco Tbox is out of a 300 as well so straight swap.
I've got about 45degs of movement in front output flange if I apply the hand brake and take front prop off. & a clunk from inside the Tbox when testing it :(

thought process at the mo is purchase a reconned centre diff and recon the rest of the box myself.

Fit the Disco box as a temp fix and send 110 box off to Whitehouse Transmission for a rebuild (instead of a ashcroft wash em and ship em box)

put up with the clonk until I spread bits of transfer box all over motorway

the latter is favored option at the mo. :D

Correct have read lots of **** about Ashcroft recently!

Nothing complex about lt230, jm recommended centre diff washers but I didn't fancy the time on it cos it felt alright at the moment, better than my 1.2

All you need is time with lt230, very simple build

not sure if true but.

I was talking to a very friendly landy mechanic (he did the welding and front end rebuild on the 110) And he recommended whitehouse. Said he wouldn't ever use Ashcrofts again as he'd had too many early low milage failures. someone was getting thru an Ashcroft recon gear box every 18months in a 130. but switched to white house and it's been in for 4 years now. also said Ashcroft average 40minutes on a rebuilt transfer box.

I've been told getting crush washers and shims set up inside the diff is a bit of an art..

Just fit a Quaife centre diff :p

Yeah well for example new input gear and bearings from Ashcroft couple years back, bearings are slightly scored now.

I pulled them off and swapped them for the old Timken that were in this 1.4 box as in better condition

Lots of stories about using old parts and bodging up worn out casings with silicone etc

Can imagine how it would be possible to get greedy/complacent if you are the household name but at their prices they should be doing a proper job

For instance gasket and seal kit for my lt230, 25 squids plus post off Ashcroft with no O rings, or 15 quid delivered off eBay for full O ring kit and viton seal upgrade also

Bit daft really!

Even I can't manage that many church roofs.

tis the same all over peeps rest on their reputation and then it turns ****e and they lose business. D4x4 are the same Used to be, the place for offroad gear. now it's just overpriced ****e that they sell and crap customer service.

dont suppose you could put a link up for the seal kit could you? im currently tryinjg to sort a 2nd hand box out and make it 100% or as close as before i stick it in, im just confused with my serial number lol

cheers fopr that :)

just the serieal number itself, iv got another thread in general but even more confused now lol.

iv looked at the list of serial numbers on aschcroft and what ratio they relate to, but my box doesnt relate to any of them..its 13a?? but its a defender box froma b reg.

Hi James

Thanks for your speedy help

Done some calcs and my gearing by tyres is approx 12% over

I just removed speedo gear from old 1.2 box and I have the frc9339 black 23 tooth gear

If I remove 12% from 23 i get 20.24 tooth, so blue 20 tooth would be correct for me :D

Just read something online that only yellow and black suit v8 models because of larger diameter speedo cable but hopefully that's not true for discovery, or I'll have to make some modifications!!

Front intermediate shaft hole is good, round and true, I had read that they can elongate, this 1.4 box looks to be in very good condition, centre diff not very worn and all bearings reuseable, so I'm confident casing is good to use also, have checked hole for roundness and it seems fine

Thankyou JM :)

can i ask where you read about the different speedo gears as i cant find anything, also trying to work out which is better for me on a 300tdi with 33's

Decent amount of info on LR4x4

On 33s you need a blue gear

I haven't fitted mine yet because as JM correctly said, the black gear originally fitted has a smaller box drive in the end.

This is fitted to v8 models and to models with electric speedo (yours)

My new one was very hard carbon steel and it broke easily when attempting to close up the box in the end to accept my speedo cable.

As such I need another one, and another method.

Might shim steel it, or ideally change my speedo cable to a 200tdi unit.

My v8 cable is in two parts because it has a speed sensor halfway down the cable for the Lucas injection, but this is no longer used on Megasquirt, so I could swap to 200tdi cable, which would fit blue gear.

Watch this space :)

fair enough il have a hunt on there then

aswell as a hunt for the blue toothed gear, dont really fancy going down the whole changing clocks milarky though
