I had a look inside the outside bearing cap, and found this dodgy lay shaft bearing!!

I'm guessing this is my problem!!

I also noticed that the input shaft is a little wobbly and could do with a little bit more preload on the bearing, another thin shim I guess.

Not a big problem but it might make a bit of a seal leak?

I think it does dribble a little.

So I could get this half of the case off fairly easily and remove that lays hart bearing, and away we go?! :D

That looks impressive.

The lay shaft bearing gives the box a drone in fifth as its direct drive iirc. Could be wrong though. Is this bearing on the back case? Could it be done in situ?

Rst of the box looks clean enough doesn't it?

If you look at the last pic, it's the smaller bearing on top that is on the short shaft.

It's well pitted and in a nasty mess.

Rest of box looks sweet, have checked as much over that we can, spinning the box and checking the other bearings with engineers stethoscope etc.

Just gonna get a bearing for this and get back in business, fingers crossed we're onto a very cheap winner :)

WOuld be good if it could. I have that drone in 5th :(

I have a drone in fourth and fifth but as I have seen the transfer box output bearing leaking, I'm hing it is just that bearing going.

Live in hope.....

200Tdi_ayre, you're just mean lol

I used to have a whine that started in 3rd, got worse in 4th and worse again in 5th, that was the diffs remarkably.

I could see how the rear layshaft bearing would give a drone in higher gears whereas I'm pretty sure the lower gears are nearer the front which COULD explain why I had a quack quack quack noise at lower speeds in low gears?!

nearly in order from rear is 5th ,1st ,2nd ,3rd, input (constant pinion)lay shaft bearings go quieter in 4th as no torque through l/s

Thanks James, yeah we had a little play selecting today but couldn't quite remember :D

Where's the best place to get a bearing from please mate?

google ftc248g ,you need to loctite race to case ,and check other end you should do both ,other end is ftc317 ,it has shim behind it ,but you can make shims for cover end ,just ensure theres no freeplay

Hi James

Thankyou for those part numbers :)

I won't be fitting rear end layshaft bearing because I'm not going to take the layshaft (or anything else for that matter) out of the gearbox, I have however checked/felt/listened to it and I reckon it and the other 3 bearings are good.

So I'm going for the quick fix fingers crossed approach! :D

Didn't know about loctite on the outer race, this has evidently not been done when the box was rebuilt last time. Not sure if any of the bearings look newish to be fair.

The front layshaft bearing outer race has evidently spun in its mount be use there are slight wear marks on one of the shims. Should be on though.

Yep will just see how I get on with shims.

Input shaft could do with one because there is a slight wobble on the shaft, but I suppose it ain't too criticical when it's located in the clutch.

Cheers :)

remove end float using shims at cover end do l/s first if you turn input you can feel it get stiffer slightly as freeplay is removed when tightening front cover ,input you can feel direct ,then loctite races ,lr dont and hence reason you find iron filings on drain plug ,bearings especially at rear spin and wear case giving more endfloat

Excellent, thankyou for the help!! Shall do as you say!

Can I get shims off the shelf somewhere? I don't have access to a lathe to part any tube off etc.

Regards, Sam :)

What do the shims need to be made from. And will it be a test fit ajust type thing. If not I could knock 1 up 4 u if u get the measurements

I reckon it's gonna be hard to measure due to the taper on the bearings!

Gonna try and get hands on a bearing today/whenever and go from there :)
