RIGHT.

So today is Friday.

And Friday evening is the time I had planned to take my gearbox out!

Now, can anyone think of a good reason why I SHOULDN'T take it out??

The way I see it is that although at the moment I don't have an instant solution, it won't begin to be fixed until I take it out, so it's definitely got to come of first right?

And then it's full steam ahead getting it sorted!

JM, do you think I can open it up myself to have a look inside for any faults, or is it REALLY not that easy?!

In wouldn't really remove it until I have a alternative to put in. Once the things out it can't be moved around.

D you have RAVE so you can take a look at that?

When watching 'A 4x4 is born' the gearbox rebuild looked fairly simple, built vertically not horizontally. Is yours a LT77?

I dunno, the gearbox itself is quite small, albeit heavy, it's the rest of the gubbins, Transfer box/ bellmouth etc that make it so much larger and unwieldy ...

Personally I'd get it out ASAP, then ignore it a while till something presents itself, or most likely a flash of inspiration makes me dive in and fettle bits ... ;)
 
Obviously once the box is out it is sat in the corner with no friends, but if the decision is made I can pay my £350 on Monday and get it done.

Just it seems to be a last resort because I'm not sure how thorough a £300 job they did last time, 4 years and 4000 miles ago... :rolleyes:

Like paul says, once it's out it encourages progress and/or fettling - but I do know paul is a fettler at the best of times :p

I was going to look on Ashcroft website, yes mine is an LT77 and they have a video (albeit sped up) of how they rebuild them, so I could get the jist.

The approved method seems to be input shaft in a vice or through a hole in a bench etc.

Unless I am told DO NOT DO THIS I think I will end up peering inside.

Could really do with hearing from HRH Sir James of Martin on this!! :)

Well baring any input from Sir James (god, anyone would think he is God, hang on - he is lol) I have been pontificating on this.

As you have a workshop, I would take it out and strip.

The £300 job only lasting 4000miles is not all that great is it? I'm sure you could do better as you are not pushed for time and will take better care. As far as I know, no special tools are needed.

Go on strip it..........

Urm I reckon we started around 7.30 and it was out by 11 ish, so lets say 3 hours be used we stopped for some pizza in the middle.

Not difficult at all, last did it 4 years ish ago and it was a right bugger, this time round if consider it an easy job!!

Wouldn't say the floor was that clean pal, I'm bloody covered in it!! :eek:
 
I think the issue is the x brake, if I were you I would go back to the standard we up as it ruins boxes.

I will save you from another disaster and take it off your hands

Winch is sorted, grill is sorted.

Will whip grill out again today and Jetwash mud out of radiator whilst I have chance, then Jetwash the gearbox off, then rebuild the front end and do y'all a winch video :)

Are you going to replace any clutch components while it's at face level !!

Not the plan to be fair. Had a new clutch when the box came out 4 years/5000 miles ago and then when I replaced the engine in August 2012 I didn't replace the clutch cos it really isn't worn, so the same applies now really.

I would however like to try a paddle clutch because I do find the stock clutch worryingly sloppy/spongy, setting off at the lights I find my clutch only really engages drive in the last inch of pedal travel yet there is DEFINITELY no issue with it.

Using the clutch in quite an on/off nature as we do with off roading I was thinking a paddle plate might be a good shout but I was kind of out of budget in August and now I'm not sure if I want one or not!

Short answer is no, long answer is above! :D

Yeah it's a bit bodgerific but I decided it was land rover so a bodge would do, and it was easier to fabricate a bodge than to get a new grill and start cutting it to fit all my stuff, cos mine is definitely a techno-grill! :D
