Hi Mr Noisy, I'm just completely in awe with what you have done on that dashboard area. It's a work of art.

I'm just imagining how good you will feel when it's all done - the very best of luck to you, even though it appears you don't need it.

Thank you mate, very kind of you.

Yeah one does get quite chuffed when it all comes together, but at the moment the extreme sleep deprivation is causing me trouble, can't sleep though cos I want to sort the car out at every opportunity! :D

Thanks again pal, nice to hear :)

Regards the red wires, I have red for positive, black for negative and that's that!

Cheers :)

As I said, you have done a very neat job, but you have built in a major problem for yourself if you ever get problems. I have seen it so many times :(. In 18 months time, when you have a problem, you will not be able to trace the wires. All you will know is you have a problem on a red wire and you won't be able to trace it! While you have it all accessible, all you can do now to recover from this is to identify each end of the same wire with cable markers.

:tea:
similar to one i had once, where it was all in black...

other than that, does look nice and neat.
waiting to see it finished as well!

Nah, won't be needing any cable markers, the wires will be fine :D

Plus, if **** hits the fan, continuity tester will come out, and/or I know where every wire goes anyway!

You think im joking, it will not be difficult to trace my own wiring.

God help anyone else who looks at it though :p

I wanted to sell my disco to fund a Defender... Then I saw this disco.

Its a real inspiration!

Pleased to hear it! Now stop being a tart and get modding, defenders are wonderful but discos are huge value for money and let's be honest, they do make an awfully good looking vehicle!

I agree to that. Defenders seem more ready for mods but carefully planned ones on a disco make the better vehicle! They are much easier to live with day to day too.

Ill have you know I have a set of mud terrains on it and a selection of hillarious stickers :p

Almost have a car again...!

gotta re wire my mud console soon with the 7 carling switches, radio, and cb, not lookign forward to doing it, looking forward to the end result haha

Yep, lighting is chained together both pos and neg, then pos goes to side lamp feed off end switch and neg goes to my main negative point, where there are about 30 wires :D

SO

Has anyone ever been in the situation where this...

...orange light is on all the time because you have purposely wired your On Off On switch backwards?

Basically this is because I am using the switch as a selector between Main Beam on, Off, and Constant On for the roof lights, and the way it is wired puts permanent live to the pin to which the orange light is wired.

Why not switch the main beam and permanent feeds you say?

BECAUSE my default position is main beam, and to have the switch downwards to match the others, main beam must be wired to the top pin and permanent live to the bottom pin, which puts the orange light on.

So, we must change the switch.

This COULD be a first for teh internets! :D

Pop the back off, caution, springs!

And we have a beautifully simple switch inside, truly American!

These are the little chaps that do the lights. Notice there is a spring and a resistor. Some Carling switches are available with incandescent lamps and I guess they don't have the resistor, just a longer spring like the earth spring:

So it wasn't too much trouble to do a cheeky move on the positive wire for the orange led (cathode?) to the spare position:

I decided I needed access to the centre pin so I could fit a fairly crude jumper wire. The only way was to drill from the outside, straight through:

And here is a visual circuit diagram :D

Soldered the wire into the centre pin bucket, shoved the untinned end into the spring hole, popped the resistor in then shoved that down which kinda crimped the wire in place and popped the spring in:

Then carefully clipped the switch back together, plugged it in and exclaimed hurrah out loud when it worked! Well chuffed with that one :D

Now I've got three to do for my mate's Hilux, he has put up with switches not matching his other switch positions for a year, I persuaded him to change them but he said only if I can find a fix for the lights :D
