Didn't mean to be rude but its a small gap from a nice off roader to a dick mobile with flashing lights and music blasting over the CB.

I agree that if you use your vehicle for 4x4 Response or recovery then yes you absolutely need LED lights. I trust a neat install...............just use the right wire lol...


Still illegal to have even on 4x4 response vehicles. I int gonna go into chapter & verse. but they is illegal.

I guess it's one of them really, I'll hardly use then, but if I'm on a country track in low visibility conditions pulling a yaris out of a snow berm I'll definitely have the beacons on, because they increase safety! And I'm pretty damn sure that the police would see it that way too.

Like last year for instance.

A lad in a punto had almost comedically lost his car and Austin Powersed it sideways into the Armco wedging it in a slot.

I turned up out the blue, and realised that it was better to shift the car than wait for a police car, then an ambulance and three fire engines.

So pulled into the lane of traffic, had hazards and roof ambers on, huge obstruction etc, but coordinated with the police who were on scene and recovered the vehicle.

Nobody was concerned that my car was obstructing the traffic or had flashy lights cos the lights were preventing cars crashing into me!! :D

So all in all I think it's in the eye of the beholder and if safety is the priority then the LEDs are a good shout.

Just like flamer kits, nitrous, decats, even cut slicks - the chances are you'll be alright unless you shove it in the rozzers face!

Plus the LEDs are a safety item so it's kind of easier to justify :p

Pffft, bit of a silly law IMHO, but I guess it's to stop Tom, Dick and Harry fitting one to his corsa "cos he can"...

If used responsibly its unlikely to get you in trouble :)

yep tis stoopid lots of the lads in YL4x4Response had strobes and beacons fitted never had a problem but was told by committee not to have em fitted. No one took any notice.. :D

Not too sure about that joe, ive had them on my vans for working roadside and certain sites like open cast mines etc.
Bt use em so do other utility companies, so not to sure about the full legalities

So basically you can fit them with the intention to use then but they must be disconnected when on the road.

Or just turned off!

a surveying vehicle

a clamping or tow truck vehicle

airport vehicles

any other specially authorised vehicle

BT Water Leccy Gas etc are probably classed as rioadworks vehicles

So as long as you are operating within the constraints of a breakdown or recovery vehicle, you're good.

Yep im saying it is a law to stop everyone fitting flashy lights because they can, but if you are in your land rover and currently operating as a recovery vehicle then flash away and nobody would bat an eyelid/have a decent case against you.

That of course means that sticking them on when you pull up outside the pizza shop is probably not ok!! :p

Just wondering what are the costs involves for mega squirt? I like my fording which is what's always put me off petrol, that and the thirst lol.

Also be interested in a price list for te strobes and a video of yours working when you've fitted them :)

Well, my Megasquirt cost £1200 but that was with at least £100 extras to make life easier, could have been done for less that £1000

And by the way it is ****ing awesome.

Tbh v8s are about a grand cheaper than diseasels so it's already paid for and you get a monster engine at the end of it, but you have 14 mpg not 25/30 like a diseasel.

So it's up to you :)

The guy has an eBay shop but he says the price list is more up to date/cheaper.

I just said id help him out, I'm not profiteering by the way.

Psst.. dont tell no1 but im working on a electronic ignition. (similar to the mega squirt one)but only for the spark side for 3 reasons 1. its not to dificult 2. it will be water proof 3. it will provide a bit more performance over the dizzy
 
The dizzy does seem to be the main offender tbh regards drive ability, but the full squirt then gives you the power/tuneability.

Megajolt is not that expensive but full MS is the best option cos it future proofs you.

I had to make the same decision because igntion was my biggest gripe, I actually quite liked the 14CUX, but I am now so glad to be full MS!
 
Got the email ta fella, stuff looks a lot nicer than the cheap eBay stuff I had on my other Disco.

Having a read up on the Mega squirt V8 website, interesting info on there. So did you just get it for the waterproof-ness of it or are you expecting performance gains as well?

this is what i basically have on my disco they are good just the wires to strip them are fiddley as they are so thin lol not as fiddley as my footwell lights were
 
It develops so much more power, honestly mate it is worlds apart from dizzy + 14cux

Mainly because the timing is accurate, then because the spark is fat (I have increased the plug gap by 0.2mm also!) and also because I can now run target AFR and tune the engine with performance in mind.

It is easier said than done writing your own fuel maps believe me, but you can squeeze more economy out of the motor too if you are careful with your igntion advance.

Me personally will be happy to cruise at 14.5-15:1 AFR which is lean enough for cruise and plenty safe/cool, but I can now run a guaranteed 12.5-12.8:1 WOT mixture and super lean on overrun, which saves lots of fuel. Popping and banging on 14cux was awesome going downhill but it was literally pouring petrol into the exhaust, not ideal.

It really is a different story on MS, no more jerky hesitant running, just smooth dependable power.

Will do an underwater video one day, planning to submerge the engine and fire it up but need to sort out a breather pipe for the power steering reservoir first!

I do like the idea of cutting a slot in the mounting point for the jate rings - was this your idea or already done ? Great idea .... makes it easy to remove the seized ground off original towbar bolts plus you can get some lube into the jate rings
 
Slot cutting wasn't so much an idea but more a necessity, but it is much easier to keep them greased now :)
 
With relaton to the flashing lights, On the farm I'm working on adn the old farm i worked on, they both had landys with beacons for escorting the combines, there was nothing special on their insurances or the way they were registered to say they were escort vehicles, just standard landys with beacons, so if all else fails, thats my excuse :D
