I always chose the bury it in cake distraction, makes people wander away from computers search for cake and come back all warm and fluffy inside :D

Mmmmm cream donut for breakfast I think :D

I thought gate descriptions might capture the imagination, but it seems to have limited appeal  Perhaps you have to be there :D

Dont forget to practice if you ever come on one of our trips, its mandatory to be at least competent :D:D:D

You realise I will include the backdrop, the rolling hills with the single clump of hills in line with the newel post set against the moody dark sky which has darkened on half of the gate into shadow :D

Oh jeez .. If anyone sorts a trip including Zip and Poppy .. I'm out!

Mind, every time I heard his gate descriptions he was usually following me, and me being me, I occasionally chipped in where he got it slightly wrong through partially blocked lines of sight ..

For instance, he once said, Wooden Farm gate, five horizontal bars with three vertical uprights, and two diagonals, hinged to the left opening inwards and horse friendly locking.

I chipped in and confirmed it was indeed a Wooden Farm gate but that in point of fact it actually had six horizontal bars, though it did indeed have three vertical uprights and two diagonals. I further confirmed the hinge and locking details ... I believe I added a little whimsy to the description and said it looked nicely made, probably almost new ...

I know whimsy is usually out of place in the articulation of correct and accurate field gate descriptions, but hey, I like to live dangerously sometimes.

Hopefully I'll get my hands on that mucky DVD for you , so stand by to PM where you want it sent ;)

Thank you, haven't rung him yet, been busy with the MOT

I now know how to fit brake shoes (preventative maintenance) and brake pipes (MOT) wont be doing the pipes on my own though.

:eek::eek: What a scary thought, me in overalls, I usually just go in whatever I have worn at the stables.

Bit embarassing the other night when Sarah invited us in for coffee. Choice of leave boots on or take them off and leave straw and shavings all over her house :D:D

How do you describe this gate? How many vertical bars and how many horizontal bars does it have?

What is a horse friendly latch?

galvanised 7 bar, with top and bottom bar being larger diameter, 2 vertical upright box section, incorporating 2 flat bar vertical anti rattle supports, standard sprung return non horse friendly latch, right hand slung (as in picture, could be other way as there aint a post) dual opening (see previous bracketed bit) utilising cheap adjustable threaded eyes.

A horse friendly latch is one of those with bar sticking up to operate the fastening. The theory being that you can unfasten them without having to get off the horse. In reality they are usually so stiff you cant move them. As soon as you lean off the horse to get hold of one, the horse moves leaving you hanging off the side of the horse (especially bad if you are riding without a saddle :D)

As for the rest I will leave it to Neil and Zip :D
