Winch - 12V or 24V?

anyways now that the SA numpty has finished answering a question that hadnt been asked eres wot i thinks based on what i has done fer meself in the past

good plan to keep the battery/s seperate - it isnt a big deal to get a battery charger on an extention lead connected once in a while to keep them topped up

12V winches appear to be cheaper and easier to buy than the 24v ones, i suspect the 24V ones are primarily designed fer heavy duty work and would be a bit OTT fer what you need (unless you get one at the right price)

having 2 batterys is a good plan, just use one keep one fer a spare in case you do more than expected and the first one goes flat

i allways carry a Trifor but when i know i've got lots of hauling to do i use a 12V cheapo winch that's been bolted to a sheet of 1/2" plate which is then bolted to the load bay - this can be taken out/fitted in less than 5 minutes

if its just fer hauling logs would one of them cheap **** stick it on yer towbar winches do?
not quite, but I dunt wonna spend more than about £250.
got sommat in mind like wot Sean said.
when looking at 2nd hand winches, 24V ones seem cheaper - I guess because there's less demand, but they seem mostly to be off recovery trucks, so I'm guessing they might have had a hard life.

cool most garages have an account with them, i will get round to fitting mine as soon as i get a whinch bumper on me tratta (i have a biiiig lump of channel i was gonna weld between the front chassis rails and i was gonna bolt it to that)

the one we've got looks very smilar to this - it doesnt look up to much work but unless your expecting to pull up tree stumps you'd be supprised how effective these are

so add a couple of tractor batteries at £50 each plus some steel plate and some fixings and you'll have plenty of change out of £250 - the next one is going to be fitted to the bulkhead behind the seats (with some stifferners and some sheet to spread the load)

I would look at it from the point of view of the duration of time you plan on using it between charges. If you plan on using it once for a short time then I would go series and have the 24V if it's a cheaper winch. However if you plan on running it all day before charging it I would go with the 12V and have the longer amp-hours of the two batteries in parallel.

having twin batteries in parallel is fraught with charging issues, unless your suggesting having 3 batteries ?

There are going to be issues with running multiple batteries regardless of the wire scheme. In the case of charging look into a charging regulator. I basically monitors both battery's levels and only charges one at a time. As just a quick example I found this: --Pro Charging Systems LLC-- Dual Pro Marine Battery Charger-- but there are many companies that make cheaper modules.

spending most of his budget on unnecessary electronics probably wasn’t part of the plan

more fooking issues! why oh why oh why can't we have problems instead..

never mind i'm sure the folk that think these things up will have a new bastardized wurd for next year , then all the sheep can use that one and we can go back the having problems insteads of issues.

perhaps we could have 'speed retardashun clamp' instead of 'brake caliper'

or how about 'door catch release mechanism' inplace of 'door handle'
