May have one again soon, I'll let you all know how it goes!
In which case make sure you save the inlet and exhaust manifolds from your original engine, AND SAVE THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE SENDER!
The Sherpa sender will not work the Defender gauge.
There are various tapped and plugged holes on the top of the head on the rear left side to screw the original sender into. One of them will fit.
Also, as mine wasn't a diesel, I had to play about to arrange fuel pipes and the throttle cable. The engine STOP solenoid was operated by the original live + wire to the coil, and I had to fit a big black button and a Ford Sierra glow plug relay, but none of that will bother you.
My engine was fitted straight in, in place of a 2.5 petrol engine that used fuel like the damned stuff came out of holes in the ground. I reckon it struggled to do 15 miles to a gallon, but it certainly stepped off the mark when my right foot hit the floor. It really was quite a good mover. With the Sherpa diesel 2.5, one has to do a bit of forward planning, and overtaking is not lightly undertaken!
Having said that, that Def 90 with 75 bhp Sherpa engine, and a military hook attached at the rear, quite happily towed an ex army four ton "generator on a trailer" about fifty miles back to my place here. A lot of the trip was done in low range 4th and 5th, but it wasn't a problem, other than we couldn't cruise 70.
The 2.5 Sherpa engine is PURE LandRover with some good features at the front end - like that different cambelt cover, and the higher injection pump. It is easy to get to the belt, and can be done without draining the water.
Once you have it fitted, let me know and I will give you a hint about injection pump timing to make it go a wee bitty better.
