Dunno but we just bought another!! We now a 2 disco family :banghead:

"if it aint broke, take it apart and fix it anyway!"

Sensible car for us as got a littlen now also.allows me to have some fun off roading etc

And the misses can be insured on it where as she cant get insured on my astra gsi

got offered one for £500, frontera parts are no longer available and i needed the boot height to set up a comms/repeater station in for RAYNET work.

Previously I had owned Toyota HiLux, Ford Explorer's (v v comfy but crap off road), and a 4.0 High output Cherokee
The fella my dad works for has had his 1996 Disco 300tdi Auto from new and it goes like a train with over 200k on the clock.
Thought lets give it a bash.
Well 2k in repair bills, lots of mud and many smiles later I have learned to love my disco (and hate it in equal measure). Overall a great truck and I'm not upset with it.
Just wish I had bought a slightly better one with Aircon.

Bought the Disco coz it was second choice instead of a Defender, they were way above my budget. ( I'm a tight old git really ).

"Other"

I was having hallucinations that it would be the ideal vehicle for the severe winters (-25 and lots of snow) here in Bulgaria. On the face of it my D1 is the perfect vehicle 1999, V8, 2 owners from new IN GIBRALTAR i.e not a speck of rust and only 50k mls, high speck, aircon works perfectly (useful as its now 37 degC here) and came with full set of new summer and winter tyres (legal requirement here), FULL MD SH the bloody lot. In actual fact its a sack of ........ How is the steering box shot after 50k mls (nope wont adjust) ?????????? How come half the electrics dont work?? How you guys in the UK with Uk weathered cars cope i do not know!!!

As a point of interest is it useless for the severe winters here as it never starts below -15 deg C - SO ironically I end up using my Mazda MX5 MK1. So in conclusion a 20 year old automatic rear wheel drive 2 seater with 4" of ground clearance is 100,000 X better than a Disco. It has NEVER failed to get me home in the most severe weather (-30 Deg C with windchill down to -45, you have NO IDEA what that is like until you have experienced it!) where as the Diso has on every occasion failed to get me ANYWHERE in severe weather!!!

I have a 1990 Defender with a 135000 miles on the clock. Steering box is worn due to crossing the Sahara several times but starts first time in the middle of winter when down to -18c. I did take it to a ski resort where it was down to -25c and after standing for a week started first time. The only complaint is the heating system, its useless.
In the snow it is unstoppable down the small roads where the snow plough don't get to.

My disco would be brilliant at crossing the Sahara as it starts first click at +40 Deg C and the aircon is excellent - in fact in temps of 30 - 35 it is too cold if left on full. If my vehicle was a 1990 with 150k on the clock and a patchy service history id forgive it its faults but for a 1999, 50k dry country vehicle with full MD history im appalled at the long list of both electrical and mechanical faults.

I needed a van (110 rear access too narrow and low).

I needed a builders truck.

I needed to tow stuff.

I needed to seat 7 people occasionally (not sitting sideways or feeling like they were in the Italian job)

I needed a 4x4 for mountain winters.

They look cool and I've yet to weld a single patch and flew through the last MOT!

If you ignore oil drips and don't worry about locking it then it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned.

Will be getting another from the south of France or Italy where they don't fall apart like burnt toast after a few salty british winters.

We went from an S3 to a Disco 'cos at the time we were towing a caravan and 250+kgs of kit and family up and down the country and the S3 just didn't like it!

It's almost up there with a Defender with tyres and kit added, but is way more comfy and easier to live with on a daily basis.

Still wish we could have afforded to keep the S3 thobut ... ;)
