Hello, does anybody know when did the p38 facelift occur, what were the differences and how do you establish whether you have an early or later diesel engine? Many thanks, Gaz.
Can I just chip in with a related question.....
What is the difference that makes a DT a few BHP & torque less than a DSE? On the remapping sites they always seem to be listed with separate power outputs on the same years. I thought it was purely trim that was the difference?
I'm not aware of any difference between them. There may have been some difference in the very early years (1994,1995) but the original brochure from 1997 certainly does not make any distinction between the power of DT and DSE and only lists one set of power outputs for the diesel engine - 136 PS at 4,400 rpm and 270Nm at 2,300rpm. I've noticed this before too but I think that one of the tuning companies just got some wrong data and it spread between them. There were quite a few variants of the M51 engine between BMW, Opel and Land Rover, this may have been the source.
Historically manufacturers have upped the power of air conditioned and automatic vehicles to make up for the loss of power from ancillaries but I don't believe this is the case here since the DT was a downgraded RR not the other way round. IIRC the DT still had aircon just not automatic climate control

Incoming spanner Spud, my DT has HEVAC climate control aircon and it was registered on the 01/02/1995....
HEVAC, heated seats and sunroof were available as an option on the DT, things like cuise control, trip computer and electric seats were not. I guess there are no hard and fast rules, the only truly distinguishing mark being whether you have a high or low line BECM.
Many thanks for the replies, coincidentally mine was registered on the same date, 30th September 1999. If you needed to put an older diesel into a newer car would it be ok, assuming you used the newer management systems.
