Hi,

I left my Rangey parked up as ususal, remote locked and no lights on.

According to my neighbours all the lights on the Rangey came on in the evening. The next morning the battery was flat. Charged the battery so the remote locking, windows dash etc all work but it wouldn't start. I live at the top of a big hill and it wouldn't even jump start. I used to have an old series 2 so know how to jump start!

The dash says there is an alternator fault but I am not convinced as a new one was fitted a year ago.

Anybody had the same problem and can advise me on what to do?

Thanks

N

If you read in the manuel it says direct battery to battery and not to earth donor battery on an earth point, when you say it won't jump what does that supposed to mean it won't turn over or it turns over but won't fire ???? That's the classic for you oh hello by the way my name is and my car is a tank fire engine or a bus

Does help to know model and year.... had to view his Profile to know it was a P38 around 1995 - can't remember the fuel type or engine size mind - this is why we ask for this info upfront people!!!!

Anyhoo - if its auto (again you haven't told us the box type either) you can't jump start them obviously....

Alternator fault, gearbox fault and traction fault are most often displayed when the battery and/or charging system are fecked.....

If the lights were off and then on - this points to either a dodgy BeCM due to moisture ingress or if the battery volts dropped over night due to duff diode pack in the alternator causing battery volt to drop, this will confuse the BeCM and cause it to do odd things, indicators and lights permenantly on is one such symptom....

Change Battery, get it started, check Alternator output (should be above 14.2V), also check the BeCM for moisture....

You don't want to go down the same road as poor Neo2 - his got moisture in and he is having alsorts of problems currently....

:welcome2: btw - don't forget to introduce yourself....

You mean you can't bump start an auto ;)

Wasn't that at a speed of 20 mph

Yep 15 to 20 mph drop it in drive and you could bump start them. They had two pumps one at the front as normal and one at the back so they could be towed a limited distance at up to 25 mph. Or bump started as the case maybe. :):)

Was going to say I could never run that fast pushing a ton and a half must be getting old

Right.

Impressed by all the responses and will be under the bonnet tonight to try and resolve.

Apologies for not doing the intro thing right! But yes a 1996 manual 4 litre V8.

Thanks all

When you say it won't jump start. Do you mean it won't turn over? If that is the case think you have lost sync to EMS. If that is the case think the 4.0 litre won't turn over at all whereas the diesel will but won't fire. Think you need someone close by with a syncmate or Nanocom for your model.

I only joined 3 weeks ago and was blown away with the responses on here compared to anywhere else. For just £3.50 you can get a LandyZone.co.uk sticker and display it proudly! Check out the donate button above too :)

You just made me feel guilty I best do it too .

Yeah which one is it Rick. Think one of the petrols will turn over but not start like the diesel and the other won't turn over at all. But can't remember which one it is.:):)

I can't remember that either Tony, but if the battery is flat you can't bump start any modern car, no power, no ECU function:)
