Topped up power steering fluid seem's like it's :censored: leaking, oh and managed to split the wheel nut locking key in two:eek: , just hope I don't need to change a wheel until I get a new one sourced:doh:
 
Finally got my nackered diff out and the donor diff in. Half shafts all in and everything now looks set. Had one of those heart in mouth moments when I'd put the long side halfshaft in, loosely, with a couple of bolts. Went to put the short side in and it didn't line up! Only took a few seconds to pull it out and move a spline round, but for that second I was, I'm sure, as close as I've ever been to a heart attack!!!

If anyone is changing a diff, I'd suggest get some help. I'd got the diff balanced on a jack, on a trolley and couldn't hold it properly and manouvre it at the same time as operating the jack. An Octopus would be an ideal workmate in this situation.:rolleyes: Or do some weight training first.

Main trouble is I'm a school caretaker and only get an hour or so to work on it, so haven't time to fill it with oil and go for a drive to check it, so that'll have to wait till tonight. :(

Picture shows my old diff, with one tooth missing off the pinion gear and another with half missing ... it's no wonder it rattled and knocked a tad ... though the crown gear looks fine with only the faintest mark/scoring ... ;)

Starting this job next week, I've got a spare axle on a trolley so going to put the new diff in that one then swap em over with a hoist.
What do I need regarding gaskets etc. Got a swivel seal and gasket kit for one side up to now.
 
new turbo hoses and air filter arrived today so will take all the pipes off later and remove the intercooler for a clean

Heh, mine was rear so a tad different. I used drive flange gaskets, diff gasket, new diff output flange, mudshield, oil seal and locknut, and a bit of Ep 80/90. Well. I've got the oil, not used it yet.

I'd already done new wheel bearings and oil seals, tracking the 'knock' down ... on alll wheels. ;)

Pic shows what I'm left with. Donor axle and all other bits done 48k miles, mine had done 117k ... the diff on the floor is my broken one. ;)

Sorry, should have added, before anyone asks, yes, I did fish the bits out of my diff housing, pic shows the big bits, threw magnet away with shed loads of flakes on it ... ;)

Checked power steering hoses for leaks, tightened and cleaned everything before checking them again tomorrow, and made the fatal :brick: mistake of thinking "well the front diff pan was knackered, what about the rear" had a look :mad:and it looks like that's the next job to do
 
Filled the diff with oil and did a short run. All sounded well. Checked oil level after letting it sit for ten minutes, all looked well so went for another run, ten miles 'normal' roads, six ish miles of motorway and one run down a local green lane. All sounded well, all felt well, no odd noises, and now that there's no knocking I have a quiet Disco ... ;)

I is now a very happy bunny ... ;)
 
Topped up PAS fluid, Put in some stop leak-we'll see if that works, Topped up antifreeze/coolant, replaced radiator plug so hopefully wont be doing the former quite as much.Checked oil and ATF.Drove it round the block.Nice.
To do the weekend:Oil change-finally, replace bulbs with ultra bright ones, check brake pads see why they are squealing so much, maybe find some new greenlanes at me folks.
 
fitted one front lift spacer yesterday an one this morning what a bastid of a job:doh: took me 5 hours in all to fit both front spacers an 4 hours to fit the rear just got to nip to paddocks an get 4 new bolts for shock drop plates;)
an when thats done i'll make a snorkel then make the rock sliders then i'll have to look for something else to do:rolleyes:
