Finally dropped the gearbox off..

Literally.

Gearbox in my van decided to give up the ghost, and poo its oil all over the clutch.... so I took it out and dropped the box off at Leek Transmissions for an autopsy.

Currently using the D2 as a rather inappropriate service vehicle, doing 100 miles a day. Ouch in the pocket....

Finally (almost) finished re-attaching the renovated Watts Linkage
Reset the wipers so that the new motor and new rack deposit them in the right place at the end of each sweep. :)
Progress. Definitely Progress.

Need to bleed the brakes...but as the ABS module got air in when I renewed 2 pipes, I believe it has to be bled with nanocom or similar attached.
:(

I've been refurbing a spare front propshaft after a disastrous failure of the original.
Nice new GKN UJs & a lovely smooth operation - unlike what's left of the old one !
D2 Front propR.jpg

I was competing at an off-road RTV trial when I appeared to lose drive to the front wheels.
I thought I'd maybe broken the diff, a CV or front halfshaft (all experienced previously ) - as there was some starnge noises underneath the front before it suddenly got quieter.

I got towed out of the mud hole I was in, couldn't spot anything obvious.
A spectator then handed me the prop & asked if it was mine ?.
Good job my TD5 has the Centre Diff Lock or I wouldn't have got home !

After 1500 miles in two weeks in the D2, its going back as my occasional use car, as I fitted the recon gearbox in the van today. Its done me some good, as I've had the time to find niggling faults with the disco. Power has always been pretty crap under 2.2k, but because I was doing short trips, it was never an issue. But finally got down to the issue. After reading loads of threads, I decided to pull the MAF lead off, and bingo, power restored. I've always discounted this as an issue because I bought a replacement from Land Rover, so thought it would be perfect. Looks like I need to buy another one now...

Another fault knocked off the ever growing list for the D2,.....

I didn't bother with a Siemans one in a LR box I got one of the Siemans ones in a Siemans box where the LR name on the MAF had been erased ! It's done 10,000 miles now & still reads fine when I check the readings with the Foxwell. Think I paid about £80 at the time.

Just stripped out the front discs, pads and back plates - got new arriving in the next couple of days.
Also replacing the nsf bearing, so have managed to loosen the 4 bolts at the back. I'm guessing I'll need to wait until osf is rebuilt before I can get sufficient effort onto the 32mm bugger-nut
:)

I bought a VDO one from Island 4x4 the other day, when it arrived it was in a Continental (as in tyres) box - thought I’d been fobbed off with an el cheapo aftermarket job, but it turns out VDO are now owned by Continental! Went back and checked, Island’s description does mention it, I just didn’t spot it.

Well Hulk certainly lived up to his name and fought the good fight!
Don't I just love it when I read the manuals, the reports, watch the videos, and they all say to just "tap the bearing off with a hammer".
Oh yeah....just like that!
Front bearing 1.jpg

Bolts out, nut off...hit with hammer...
Hit harder
Hit with bigger hammer
Hit real hard with really big hammer

And eventually:

Front bearing 4.jpg

Yep...split the whole unit....rear section still attached!

Hit is some more with hammer....then used chisel...and eventually it gave:

but it seems the section along the bottom edge had basically fused to the swivel.

Yep....just tap it with a hammer...

Been there..... had to use a fine chisel to ease the damn thing off..... make sure you clean the area up, and apply a liberal coating of anti seize when you reassemble.

Cheers for the advice on the MAF. Power has been so bad lately, disconnecting the maf plug makes it drive like a dream...

New handbrake cable this weekend for the D2, after being amazed my MX5 passed its MOT today... its a rust bucket.

Finally registered mine in Estonia, as an import from UK, after buying it from a field in Finland where it sat written off for 8 years. Registration process took 10 months and two failed inspections. I almost can't believe it's over.

... I will still have to drive without an MOT for the following many months however, hehe

Ordered a new VDO MAF from Alive tuning..... Removed the old handbrake cable, to find that I have another sodding oil leak from the rear output on the transfer case, thats gooped oil onto the transmission brake. Removed all of that, decontaminated with brake cleaner, and am waiting for a new Cortico seal. Might as well go the whole hog and fit a new flange assembly.
