i always thought u needed a working speedo , in order u can drive within speed limits, lol

According to the AA website "MOT test for cars";
"Speedometer
Your car will fail the MOT if a speedometer isn’t fitted, is incomplete, inoperative, has a dial glass broken/missing or can’t be illuminated." An MoT testing station can't normally check the calibration of a speedometer. [BGW]
Also, according to the IVA requirements, a GPS speedo is not allowed as the main speed indicator, so it is just to be treated as "a pretty addition".
These changes were introduced as part of the 2012/13 major changes. There also some other rather surprising changes worth taking a look at.

wasn't 100% would have been surprised if it hadn't been a mot failure , seeing u need one to tell how fast ur going and also to record the mileage

Journeys with a defective speedo are permitted when the defect occurred during the current journey, or as a result of the defect it has ceased to be in good working order and steps have been taken to have the vehicle equipped with all reasonable expedition, by means of repair or replacement, with an instrument which is in good working order. (Reg 36 (2))
The only legal alternative to the original Speedo that i can find is an approved type tachometer.

So, there you have it.
According to @blue beasty, @gstuart, the AA and me, if you take the Disco on the road, even if it's just to an off-road place, you'll need an Mot and that means a working speedo.

Mine isn't MOT regs but road regs, it's a traffic offence with some allowance for just broken/getting fixed.

I think people misunderstood what I said. I said I don't use a satnav in the vehicle and basically was saying that I wanted a speedometer that read correct.

So, how do you know that it does read correctly?
I don't think that the bill will be that interested in your maths, you could check with VOSA as to where the nearest speedo calibration validation facility is located.
I checked the speed using a satnav. And alot of people here really do seem to like ****ing on other people (or maybe just a select few).
The speedo correction has given me a usual error of roughly 2-3% error across the speedo range (for those who like to pick holes, up to 80mph) and as usual, the higher the speed, the bigger the physical error. I dont care about this as it reads slightly faster as they should so you know your always UNDER the limit.
As for people using satnavs, I use one everyday for work. And I can tell you that yes, they are pretty accurate, but only when they have clear line of sight and going along on the flat. Just last night when out in my car it was reporting 30 and I was actually doing 40.
I always trust the speedo more than I do the satnav because so many environmental factors have to be right for the satnav, even though they're fairly consistent, it still gets it wrong.

Finished off the fix to my show-stopping ace pump failure. Turns out changing a fan belt without removing the fan is actually quite easy on the old td5!
However, in the process I did lean on and snap the crappy plastic part of the coolant reservoir return hose (the bit coming out the top of the radiator) so I can't road test my fix without a fountain of oat coming through the grill Always something!

Noticed uneven wear on front near side tyre the other day. Gave the wheel a shake and found excessive vertical play. Checked whilst jacked up. All play disappeared when brakes applied, no movement in swivel.
Today's job was to repack and adjust bearings. They were in surprisingly good nick, but not a lot of grease left. Will do the others now, starting with offside front.
Also bought some one shot cv grease and will top those up this afternoon.

reminds me of the other day , popped out and noticed smoke coming from a car, as i drove past on the opposite side could hear the engine revving very high and smoke was pouring out the exhaust smelt liked cooked chips, assume the turbo had gone
think it was a renault minivan, felt really sorry for the guy as he stood there at the side of the road watching his car self distruct ,
