I'm surprised that so few people own the Freelander 1, V6 although I saw a youtube video review recently and it mentioned that the V6 was auto "as standard". Is this the case? If so - perhaps this could account for why so few people own them.

Personally though - I love autos ;-)

I have the 2.5 V6 X reg and luv it. Easy to drive, only probs so far are the rear passenger door electric windows don't work and the 'lift kit' had to be removed as it was causing a suspension problem.
 
Yup, there is a prejudice in the UK and in most of Europe that auto-boxes are prone to go wrong / are more expensive / I can do better myself - etc.

I have an auto TD4 having had a manual previously and I have to admit that I can't do as good a job off road or in the snow and ice as the auto-box can.

With 'sport' mode and 'Command Shift' I have the best of both worlds.

I've followed the big boys off road and frequently have had to wait for them to get going again after a duff change.

Yes I know the perfect driver who never makes mistakes and is always in the correct gear will never feel any benefit blah, blah, blah. If we are truly honest with ourselves we must all admit to having chosen the wrong gear - sometimes.

On a LR Experience day I've done the back to back tests / comparisons and I'm very happy with my choice.

I enjoy the Q-car element off-road as most folks don't expect the Freelander to achieve half of what it can do. Most owners only use about 10% of it's potential I reckon.

I wish I'd had an Auto Freelander back in the 70s when I was rallying an Escort Mexico!!! :cool:

I love my TD4 - it can sit on the Autobahnen on Cruise-Control / auto-Pilot at a steady 90mph for hour after hour with no stress at all. :D That's neither on me, or on the FL, by the way!

It also makes light work for me in city centres where a bicycle would make faster progress. No left-leg cramp any more! I'm getting on you know!

Got a 2000 plate L series 3 door Hippo in java black :)

My other black 3 door Hippo is in the process of being taken apart because its old and tired, and was a test bed for all my L series developments. Going to give me a shed load of spares for the future, and all the engine upgrades can be transferred to me new Hippo in the spring :D

I seriously wish you all the best of luck with that - I did that a few years back and discovered that it was the same bit's on both that wore out/broke/fell off.

If you have the space a good idea is to buy a write-off of the same age as what you've got. I did that and got a whole set of spare mechanical parts. :D :cool:
 
Im quite chuffed to be honest, its my 1st land rover although I have grown up around them.
I'd prefer something bigger like a disco but as its a daily and a workhorse it needs to get decent mpg too. Im not used to the sedate bumbling along and the lower cruising speeds, (im from the VAG camp), but my golf struggles with wet fields etc so I needed something more tractable to tow a trailer at the weekends. The L series is over engineered and under-tuned! :D

I'm glad your chuffed with your Freelander and I was meaning to encourage you.

If you've had experience of Volkswagen AktienGesellschaft products then you will be no stranger to over-engineering. Have a glance at a VW golf front wheel bearing for example!! :eek:

I've had a Disco in the past and prefer my TD4 - I couldn't afford to feed the thirsty Disco horses on a 4000K round trip several times a year.

If your looking to up the power on your L series a bit see the

web-site as they do some clever bits for L series too.

I'm no stranger to diesel tuning, iv written a little guide on here to help others. I like the look of those box's. They look very well thought out. I'm more of a fan of the physical chip approach.

I'd like a td4, sadly my hippo has no abs/TCS/hdc, which is a blessing and a curse lol

2005 Freelander td4 - surprisingly reliable, quite nippy, good on fuel, over all great car! -- this is my dads motor -- he likes it but I prefer being a trattor driver!

New to the forum

Just bought a Freelander 2 I6 to add to the collection which currently includes:

Range Rover Sport TDV8 (yes I do offroad it)
Range Rover Classic (stripped for rebuild)
Discovery 1 currently undergoing some major upgrades

and on the none Landy front a 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1, e39 540 and a Clio 1.2.

Basically if it has wheels and an engine I'm going to like it.
 
Freelander 2L. Had a broken one for the last time, sold it as scrap to the second hand spares guy, lost a bundle. For the money spent on that piece of crap, I probably could have bought a proper 4x4.
 
FL 2004 Premium Sport. All mods done (egr, BMW breather etc.).
One tin of lithium spray grease and nearly all the interior rattles are gone. A few packs of dynamat sorts the rest.
 
2004 freelander TD4 sport 3door in black all OEM bits on light guards side steps parcel self sunblinds mats mudflaps swanneck towbar fuel burning heater.:D
