Bought a 1.8 out of necessity when my Disco rotted from infront of me and I needed a vehicle for my holiday at very short notice.Hated the engine, but liked the road manners. Bought a V6 and had that for 6 years, plenty of mods and 3 engines. Now have my Td4, again heavily modified, roll cage etc. Also have a Rally Freelander Td4 built by Tornado Motorsport.
I've owned 7 Lightweights, 3 ex MOD series 3 LWB, 2 exMOD 110's, an Ex MOD 90, civvy 90, 4 Discoverys, an 88" coil sprung hybrid and a Disco II. The Freelanders in my opinion are the best of both worlds, comfortable to drive, less noisy , definitely better MPG and get me about in the rough stuff. Oh, and a doddle to park.
That's why I get so p!$$ed off with the Defender crowd who do nothing but slate freelanders , but who have never even driven one on the road let alone off it.
I use mine off road, load it for trips to the tip, fill it with camping gear, go to work in it etc etc. Yes it's bloody versatile , and I do all of the above without being deafened , getting back ache and being able to do it at motorway speeds without breaking the bank in fuel.
Loved my 90, but my Freelanders are better.They are loaded with off road goodies, but can still be driven like a hatchback when needed.

2003 Td4 with bmw crankcase filter mod. my first landy so glad i chose the freelander best car i ever had so far i have noticed that when something not quite right she like to let you know but so far aint let me down ps thanks for reply on youtube this year hippo was great and made me fill more confident on taking fl off road so far she aint struggled atoll

1998 L series 3 door, just turned over 100,000 miles this week. I went looking for a BMW estate in Feb 2012 when my Passat' s dual mass flywheel blew up. While looking around the Missus saw a dark green Freelander and said we'll have that!! It was the bog standard model but now has 2+1 rear seats, glass roof panels with sun blinds, alloys and side bars. I recently fitted a Bell Engineering recon VCU, new clutch, new oil cooler pipes and timing belts. To improve performance I fitted a big dual cone air filter which really has worked, more welly above 3000rpm. Would only change it for an L series 5 door. I use a website called pitstoplog.com to record fuel consumption, since April 2012 its averaged 32.3 mpg over 8700 miles.

2004 td4 sport. owned since 2007 and still going strong. Wonder if i can keep this thing patched up until tax exemption? Misses drives it and i just get to frig with it when given the opportunity.

Bought as a stop-gap after selling my D2 but turns out to be the perfect road-going LR so it's staying! Means running two cars when I sort an off-road Def90 or RRC but worth it for the fuel saving, convenience and comfort during the week.

2004 F1 TD4 BMW Engine, green color, wood dash inserts.
Was my father's dream and I decided to keep and improve it.
Sofar I've done the BMW crank vent and EGR removal. Not EGR Blank, I removed the whole EGR cooler, EGR valve and related ducts and hoses.
Next mod will be a Rover Ron box and boost gauge.

Interesting that the biggest ownership by far is the TD4.
Yet the most common ones for sale by far are 1.8 K series.
(V6 is of course niche)
Does that mean that anyone who can be bothered to do their research would buy a diesel?

Well I did my research and concluded that a TD4 was the best option...... Then a v6.......But I accidently bought a 1.8 k series......
And to be honest I prefer petrols to diesels (especially when working on them). The smell of petrol fades quickly if you splash some on you when filling up etc. diesel doesn't. Petrols have more get up and go.
I just wish mine had a few extra toys and goodies on it.

Last date for tax exemption is 1973 , Plenty of cars over 25 years old now but no free tax anymore , It's all about how much money they can take us for :mad2:
