Correct me if I am wrong (quite possibly), but can't you get at the back of it by bending the tab at the back of the runner? Then trying the screwdriver trick that way?

Just picked up the girl after the replacement of the steering rack, track rod ends, lower steering column and flexible coupling. Took the rangie out for a test drive and what a difference!! She feels like a new motor, smooth and silky steering, responsive and no more clunks, cracks or wobbles!!

WOOHOO!! Happy days...till the next installment!

Bin lucky as managed to get a vgc second hand rack from ebay, checked it out before getting it fitted and it's mint!!

Labour charge cost £250.00 for fitting all the parts!! Got my local indy garage to do it, as they're the best bunch of guys around!! 7.5 hours labour in total (included fitting some other bits for me), inc. new pas fluid & tracking!

Parts have come out not too bad:

2nd hand Rack - £150, inc. shipping
New track rod ends x2 - @ £31.00 each
New lower shaft coupling - £80.00
New Flexible coupling - £27.00
Various Bolts, nuts and rings - £10.00

I've kept the old rack and am gonna strip it down and refurb it myself, then I've got a spare if needed!

That v's a recon rack from LR - @ £1,400.00, so not too bad!!

The missis has actually just agreed that once my business pays back the loan that I lent it (next couple of months) which will sort our finances out at last, that we can do a 2010 facelift wooooooo

You will need to do the 2010 rear facelift too then otherwise it will look pants

Cleaned it out so I can see the floor.

Looked at the 1988 Vogue SE and wondered why I bought that bag of sh!te, looked at the 1984 Vogue and thought "I got a fooking lot of work to do there" then went back to my work cutting up a rsj for a lintle.

Finally got around to swapping out my duff front nearside spring.....was absolutely horrified by the perished spring!

Drove it through a river and got a puncture

Got the lpg float sender changed. Can just get 82 litres from dead empty. Well chuffed as only cost me £58.20 to fill. Should be a good range in there now.

Admitted to myself that I,ve fallen in love with it!!

bought the 4.0 v8 on a 2000 plate as a winter hack just to get to work in bad weather.
fixed the RF reciever problem, new battery and have had a great, safe car.
made the mistake of polishing it. It looks so grand.
now i'm gonna keep it.
jobs that i thought i could live with and leave i am now gonna do,

new front under bumper thingy, new driver side blend motor, check out non working sat nav, full service.
