Not bad for $300 - especially with the genuine LR boot mat. :D

The PG1 is an 'average' gearbox, not 'the worst' - so you've probably got linkage issues or some other problem. Mind you its about the worst for getting into reverse.

As you say, rear load space is poor. The cover for mine resides in the garage just to make what space that is available as usable as possible.

I'm sure you will enjoy your new friend.
 
Looks like it's got the original Goodyear Wrangler spare on it.
The PG1 is a Honda design box, from the mid 80s, but it's not a bad one and does respond to an oil change with the correct MTF94 oil.
 
As above on the PG1 - it changes nicely, although not so much on my FL1 1.8; the linkages could do with sorting out. I've got rose-linked cables on my MGFs, and the change on those are sweet as you like. :)

£150 for a running FL1 is a bargain. My barely running "Spares and Repairs" went for £275 on the bay of fleas, but there again, mine only had 81K miles, so less scary for the buying public :)

I'm sure the gear change can be improved on the FL1. Maybe a quick shift could be made up, and improved linkage joints too.

I only paid £300 for my 1.8 XEi facelift, which I don't think was too bad for an easy to fix cat N write off.
 
£300 is good value imo. Values are in the duldrums, but at least post-2001 K-series hippos are ULEZ compliant (and can drive into Bristol...)

I didn't know that. I actually asked the wife to check that our Mazda was compliant when we went past the sign on the way to Wembley on Saturday. :confused: She said it was compliant, which was nice to know. If I'd known a post 2001 1.8 K was, I wouldn't have bothered asking her to check. :)

Yes, despite being only EU3 compliant, the 4-cylinder K-series all have very low NOx emissions, which is all that the ULEZ is concerned with :)

The Freelander could really do with a 6-speed gearbox with an over-drive top, I agree. And probably a slightly lower first for when you take it off road. It'll always be a compromise when all you have are five speeds to play with and no low-range box. Overall, the ratios are okay, but I do miss a decent cruising gear on the motorway.

I'm sure I read that there was a 6 speed PG1 box, made by someone, possibly Quife? Although I suspect it would be silly money and wouldn't necessarily fit the FL1.

The taller final drive from the L series box would fit, but that could make 1st a bit to high.
 
Yes Quaife do one and also a sequential. And yes, it costs more than 10 times your latest FL1 acquisition (probably closer to 20 times actually).

I had to justify putting £60 of pez in it! ;)

The engine runs ok.
Clutch slips in 5th if you boot it.

Seats are surprisingly good for a longer chap, the same as if not better than a RRC i had.

Needs an Oil change..

A few litres of oil for a change, i hear Tesco do good oil ;)
