Wading - how deep can I go without a wading kit?

Its not, actually, in the gearbox, but underneath the clutch housing.

Also wading plugs can be left in all the time. LR recomend removing them every 6000 miles to check - thats all.

Tiz a good idea to replace the 4 breather pipes and extend them to the top of the bulkhead.

Yeah dont plan to go any deeper, until I get a bit more confidence at least :). But probably not on my way to work in any case. I wear shirt, shoes and trousers for work, so it might raise a few eyebrows if I turn up soaking wet and dressed in fishing waders.:cool:
 
the trick is to extend them to a manifold at the top of the bulkhead - then if yu fit a snorkle, yu only need to extend the one pipe into the snorkel. Otherwise yu will be changing axle and box oil more often than yu want. Still a good idea to check them after every wading excursion tho.

id check the diff oils too at some point.Mine turned to emulsion after playing in essexs fords.
 
yes, if you are fitting a snorkel, just join all the breathers to a manifold and then from there, a thicker pipe through the snorkel right to the top.

this is what i had on my disco, and now fitted to the Defender

search for wading kit on eBay, there's a guy selling, which has a poster in the pic showing axledeep 4x4, the bloke is really helpfull and he has a Defender too, so he'll be able to advice on what to get and send plenty of tube enough for a Defender or Disco

Do you bring the breather pipe up the side of the snorkel using cable ties or drill into the snorkel pipe under the bonnet and silicone a short breather pipe from the manifold into it?


Will check/replace the diff oils also. In fact, I'm sure it could do with a service and engine oil change anyway, so will plan to do all that together soon.

personally - i wud bring it up the outside - so that it does not compomise the integrity of the snorkel - but others drill into it and mastic the joint. I wouldnt as you want the snorkel to be water tight.

bought my wading kit off axle deep and sold him a few bits later on too. Kit was good.
 
I have a 300tdi Discovery, it has the plastic airbox.

Can I fit a snorkle to it or do I need to source an earlier canister type air box?
 
Keep it below the air intake and you'll be fine. Just don't let the ecu get wet whatever you do. Don't sit in water or it will fill up the car. I've had my 200 over the bonnet but I do have raised intakes.

You can fit a snorkel to it, all you have to do is cut a hole in the wing.

there should be a hole already next to the airbox, probably covered by a rubber seal, then you just cut a hole in the outer wing.

Would look for a snorkle that comes out by the back of the wing, near the windscreen. Will have a look for that bung on the inner wing tomorrow.
 
should be something like this, but this is for a Safari snorkel, if you get a southdown, the hole on the outer wing is done closer the windscreen and then the flexi pipe runs between the inner and outer wing (from airbox to hole near windscreen)

That's great. A few people I know have made there own but have swapped to a barrel style filter housing. Would rather keep my airbox if I can. Will have a look at the weekend.
