Does make you ponder a bit though. I know the Defender had issues over crumple zones, air bags and other safety stuff, but wasn't one of the issues in America satisfying emission regs?

I am almost certain the VWs satisfy US emission regs. Don't think that is the problem. It's saying they were cleaner than they are that is the problem. The new don't touch a road do it in the lab emission test is the problem. They are miles away from actual. This has been a problem since they were introduced lots of talk about it. The MPG figures are miles away from reality for quite a lot of modern vehicles tested this way.

You know how they make clean diesels right - chopping up the particulates into small unmeasurable particles. So it becomes "clean"
The irony being that these new smaller particles of which there are many more than there were of larger ones are more harmful to your lungs , stay in the air longer and travel further......
So in theory yer mans right , his rollin coal black smoke big particles are slightly better than the small unmeasurables they are sticking out from modern cars.

Would all these harmful emissions still be being chucked out of the exhaust if diesel engines were run on peanut oil as originally designed?

That steam loco is I think a WW2 S160 built in the USA for use in Europe, arriving here from late 1942 many being loaned to the UK railways prior to going to Europe after D-Day.
A, It therefore wouldn't wear a VW badge cos we were bombing the crap out of them at the time.
B, Also it's exempt emission tests as it was built way too long ago.
C, the emission tests don't apply to steam engines.
And finally some of us are nerds not just on Landrovers!

Good point about the emissions from veggie oil. This latest scandal is going to be ammunition to use against all diesels - and that's most Land Rovers. I can see LEZ type bans coming in to more cities and towns. So the question is - would swapping to veggie be worth it, in terms of emissions?

LEZ type bans are coming to more towns. Derby, Bristol, Leeds are just 3 cities that are going to be part of an upcoming trial where they will charge diesel owners approx £8 go enter an inner city area. But the buses will still probably be exempt, and still empty.

Really?? can you give me a link, I live near Leeds and not heard anything, cant find owt via google either...
Theres been some suggestions and proposals banded about, but nothing concrete.

tbh , so long as the inner city is the inner city im quite happy for that.
cars have no place in citys. pedestrians , busses , trains and bikes.
How ever our government are so far behind it smarts when it comes to the infrastructure.
im in norway just now - it might as well be a different planet - even down to the attitudes of the locals when it comes to mobility. - same in a majority of holland , the citys of france ive been to (although rightly so the country areas ive been to are still carcentric- they have to be) denmark and belgium have all made steps to force you out of your car before you reach the city centre and use other forms of transport.
A step in teh right direction imo. I have no inclination to sit in my land rover in traffic to get to a shop in town. Id sooner park on the outskirts an use the train or the bus to get in.
