Viscous Fan, is it broke?

I removed the Viscous fan a couple of years ago and replaced it with a Kenlowe electric fan which has worked fine. I'm having a garage clear out and wandering if I should dump the old Viscous fan.
The reason I went electric was because the engine took ages to reach normal running temperature. I have done all the thermostat and sender unit replacement etc. Is it normal for the Viscous fan to keep turning all the time even on start up when the engine is cold? or is that a sign that it's b--gered.

It should turn, but you should be able to stop it with a rolled-up newspaper ( should be able to stop it with your hand, but that's obviously not recommended! ). How did you have it stored? I've heard they only like being kept in an upright position!

Ive always stored them upright when off the car, BUT the new viscous couplings come in boxes and can be any way up so possibly an old wives tale?
In all reality its worth squat so bin it
They turn all the time when engine is running its just when they are doing nowt they are freewheeling, but just to confuse matters when engines cold they do drive a for a little while until the viscous oil sorts itself out

Dont matter which way up you store it. I had several laying flat on a shelf for a few years and they were fine when fitted.
