L322 V8 tap tap tap

Well spotted Saint, yes, it has a BRC lpg kit fitted.
The only things that were found to be wrong when it was stripped was the Vanos seals were squared off (worn), there was a stone in the sump (God knows), the right cam chain tensioner was knackered (wouldn't fully compress and wouldn't pump back out) and lastly, the chain was about a link and a half longer than the new chain so there was a bit of stretch.
Hopefully picking it up today all being well.
 
Ye probably, been 10 weeks without it now and as much as I'm looking forward to getting it back, if he needs to take his time to make sure he's done a thorough job, I don't really mind waiting a bit longer.

On the up side, I know it's not the chain or the guides now so I'm gonna run it as it is until I get the inclination to sort it, starting with a new set of followers.
Happy but not happy, I'd have thought if it was the followers it would tap all through the revs but it stops when it gets a rev.

Thats a **** but the guides can't have been far away from needing doing especially as you run the LPG as it's my theory that the hotter running temps makes the guides brittle which could be total bollocks.
At least the garage knows how to get the thing apart now as well.
Did you ever try the flush or bleed procedure ?
I am a little concerned regarding the 'Stone' in your sump as you you couldn't get a stone in the sump without taking the sump off, putting it there and then putting the sump back

What a bummer, how's the oil pressure?
 
Worn oil pump or followers could lose pressure at low revs, then when the pressure increases when the engine is revved, they pump back up and tapping stops.

Sorry the recent work hasn't helped, is it better or the same?

But atleast you can live in peace knowing the guides and chains won't fail for a while trashing the engine.
 
Thanks lads, oil pressure hasn't been checked yet but should be getting done before I get it back. That said, the engine is spot on while idling except for this one tap. I'll be honest, I originally thought it was a lifter and should have stuck to my guns.
The engine was flushed and oil and filter changed before it was stripped but it didn't help. One thing I was told is that the engine was quiet for around 15 mins when it was first started then gradually started to tap but I haven't heard it myself yet so don't know if there's any improvement.
As you said Saint, at least I know my guides and chains aren't going to let go so there's no real reliability issue.
I'll update as soon as I know more, at least I've got the timing tools to do the lifters now.

There are some "Lifter tune up" engine oil additives that are available, that may be worth a try, some may even work!
The lifters can get tired and as Saint V8 has said they will stick at low revs and then push up when revs/oil pressure increases, indicating sticking/worn lifter valving or low oil flow/pressure to the lifter oil gallery.
 
Thanks, I've tried a lifter additive, bought 2 cans at a tenner each to take into account the massive oil capacity but still no joy.
Doing the oil pump is probably cheaper than replacing the lifters and if I honestly thought that would cure it I'd be straight on it but I think I'll do the lifters first and see what happens.
After all the work done on the engine I'm expecting it to be quieter than it was except with a low rev tap.

Being done today mate.
It still has to be a faulty lifter as the oil pressure is high enough to knock the light out and it's just 1 lifter tapping. If they were all tapping I'd be putting a pump on it without needing to check the pressure.
 
I have come across all those articles while I was deciding what needed to be changed to fix it. Mine is a weird one in that if the engine is at low idle (around 500 - 600 rpm) there is no noise. When the revs are raised to around 750 rpm by turning on the a/c, it starts to tap then if I continue to raise the revs, it taps up to around 1500/1750 rpm then stops tapping. If I rev the engine from idle, ie, full throttle, it doesn't tap at any rpm but a tap can be heard as the revs are dropping from around 2000rpm to idle.
It's just being an arse and I wish it would break so I can fix it but it seems it will never break or get any worse.

Did you try the bleed procedure yet now that it's back together ? it's very frustrating when you find a similar post somewhere and you follow it all the way through thinking this is exactly the same as my problem and then get to the end and the git hasn't posted back how it was sorted.
