I got to "page" 4 and simply didn't have the time to keep reading...:p

Anyway, from my point of view, that rattle sounds too much like a little end bearing. Y'know, the con rod & piston end gudgeon pin.

Back in the day, the 2.0 Cavalier would blow the head gasket between 2 & 3 and for all the world, sounded like the crank shaft was about to fly out in fifteen different directions, but it was a simple repair.

I may of course, be wrong, but it sounds awfully like it to me.

Now, like my mate Paul's Vectra diesel 1.9, it could go and go and go (still going) or it could crap out on a hard uphill run...

So, did he ever get it sorted? What was it? I'm going to skip to the end....:D

that rattle sounds too much like a little end bearing.
I know, I had the same thoughts many times but kept telling myself little end failures are very rare.
I think I'll put the followers in for peace of mind then plump for an engine rebuild if they don't shut the bastard up lol.
Thanks for the reply.

My mate Paul's Veccy suffered from a leaking (diesel) injector, which allowed less "push" on the down stroke, lack of decent diesel didn't help (Tesco's witches brew), but it also had a kit (as opposed to a proper re-map) for upping the BHP.

Anyhoo, I fixed the mess and got it through it's test, tapping and all.

But I really think it is a little end.

I hate being the bearer of bad news, but I would be looking down that particular sh!tty road, if only to rule it out o_O

Once I get down that road mate I'll never actually know what it was because everything will be getting replaced, that us unless it's really wobbly and the engine builder mentions it.
Can anybody recommend an engine builder?
Thanks Doo :(

More info and 3 more videos for you lads.

Got a P0011 code, cam a, bank 1 timing too far advanced........ easy fix and very explainable how it's happened considering the work it's had done.
Now the videos (bear with me).

1st,engine at slightly raised idle with the aircon switched on (as I said, it doesn't tap at normal idle speed)

Next is with the car in gear, handbrake on,

This is from the drivers window revving, the higher revs it was held at is between 1500 and 1750 rpm, no noise and the acceleration revs, also no noise but noise starts as the revs get to around 1000 rpm as it's on its way back down.

Ok, that's it. Mr Saint, still going for a follower?
Mr Doo, little end? It's done me and everyone else who's heard it, can't even be sure where the bleeding noise is coming from anymore lol.

Thanks lads

I'm with Saint, weak cam follower.
I bleedin hope so, as for half revs frequency, it's quiet from 1500 right up to the Rev limiter but Saint knows his stuff and the followers are getting done soon enough, gonna go on holiday in August in it first though lol.
If the followers fail to shut it up, it's having a rebuild.

Jeeeezus, hadn't thought of listening to how often it taps. Thanks for that, takes a weight off now cos obviously if it was in the block it would tap twice as often being 2 turns of the crank for every firing cycle.
Thanks very much, really happy about that.

Certainly sounds like it is coming from the top end and I would say it is far too loud and tinny to be a little end (but I could be wrong).....

It does have that distinctive sound of a follower bouncing about.....follower failure is rare but not unheard of....

How are your exhaust gaskets?

I'm guessing they're fine as there is no noise accelerating under load. My S62 engined M5 is blowing at the manifold and it sounds like the engine is knocking when it's under load and the Range Rover isn't making anything like the same noise.
As Gazbo said, the noise sounds like half engine revs frequency so I'm gonna go with your suggestion of followers and I'm quite sure you are correct now.
Thanks.

Follower failure, although rare might also be an inherent danger of having a bad oil leak and hard cornering and braking. I know I shouldn't and it's not built for it but I drive it like a sports car at considerable expense and detriment and I'm trying to learn to go easy with it and save the hooning for the M5 lol

Having listened to all three video's I can almost certainly agree it is not a little end as it would rattle harder upon revving.

It reminds me of a hydraulic lifter. I had a Vx Nova saloon (I know, but holy sh!t it could corner, far better than the hatch versions). Anyway, one night in Skye, I pulled into the filling station in Broadford to fill up and for some obscure reason, I over revved the engine and was rewarded with a similar nose to the RR there and drove home convinced I had ruined the engine. Imagine, all the way to Inverness in the dark, p!ssing rain, with deer looming ahead and waiting for the engine to expire. It rattled it's metal mammaries all the way home and I parked it with a heavy heart

Next day, I went out to take it to my lock up only to be surprised as hell when it started with not a peep of a rattle :rolleyes::D

Seems I managed to jam one of the lifters which stayed jammed all the way home but when it cooled it came free. Mad!

(the RR also sounds like (don't laugh), the vacuum pump on my friends old VW LT van. It rattled like charity workers taking over the street, but pump the brake pedal a couple of times and it would die down for a few seconds... The vacuum pump was worn and they are known for this)

Anyway, if this engine version has hydraulic lifters, could one of them therefore be jammed with carbon or a bit of dirt partially plugging the oil hole? I wonder if removing them all, bathing them in Kerosene for a 24hr period would help, then a couple of oil changes (change oil, drive 500 miles or so then again.

And......... Yes I have carried out the bleed process, long before it went to spend 11 weeks in the garage while it had open heart surgery.
