Hi, New to the zone. Just bought a 2001 v6 with 61000 miles got it home seemed fine, next day took her out for a drive and she over heated. Garage have informed me the head gasket has gone:( Is this a common fault? Should have her back next week having cost me an extra £1500 Your advice please as towhether I should keep it or sell her on. Dont want another bill if this is common. Many thanks J.Fowler

2 things - first of all the car wasnt fit for purpose if yu bought from a garage - dont pay a penny and demand your money back.
If yu MUST have a Hippoo (freelander) - go fur a doozil (TD4)

Hippoos are prone to HGF - both 1.8 and KV6 - amongst a litany of problems:eek:

if you want a good bedtime read - search for HGF in the Freelander section:rolleyes:

oh - and welcome to Looneyzone;)

just do a search down in the freelander section - you'll find loads of other people with the same problem. sell it and get a TD4 if you must have a freelander, or better still sell it & get a Disco or a Defender.

If you'd done some research on here first (or any other forums ) you'd have seen the number of problems there are with a petrol freelander - sorry, not trying to rub it in :D

welcome the forum btw

As siad by MHM IF brought from a trader/garage don't pay a penny for any repairs and demand full refund Contact creditcard company and recover payment or cancel cheque. If you brought it privately then see a solicitor.

if you brought it privately you'd probably have more rapid results going round to see the seller with a baseball bat in hand

Payed cash so no joy there, also hg being replaced as we speak. Thanks for the quick responce. Is there anything else I should know about?

Not a violent man myself;) but thanks for the concern. I should have checked the water for gunk but the car seemed so clean. My fault for not being on the ball. Can anyone tell me if this is likely to happen again (hg) according to my mechanic the hg is made up of three layers of metal and one side of the engines gasket came appart slightly letting the water mix with oil.

It's not 'your fault' - anything that is sold has to be 'fit for purpose' & if yours only lasted 1 day it clearly wasn't - was it a private sale or dealer - is the garage that is repairing it the same one you bought it from ?

too many people don't know their rights & get walked all over

how much did you pay for it orginally?

seems to be some money to be made here - buying dead uns giving DK a fiver to valet it and selling them on to nice non violent peeps like you who seem not to mind being ripped off

payed 2450 for the car in cash from a guy in york, my local mechanic is doing the work (this one can be trusted) If you think I realy have a case then can someone give me some advice?

if your mechanic hasnt allready done any work dont let him start - get him or some other qualified motor engineer to do you a report (you might have to pay £200 for one at most) detailing the faults

if you have the time get a solicitor involved, the CAB are likley to be able to point you to one that would take this on, many wont because it's essentially a private matter - unlikly that TS would get invovled as it's a non commercial sale

if you dont have the time go talk to the seller, he might be a reasonable bloke - if he's not reasonable go back with yer baseball bat

and most importantly make a note of all dates and events including any visits you have to the seller, this would be important in the event of a claim

but unless you do have more money than sense dont just let the seller get away with ripping you off, unless he did tell you the car had "issues" ?

hope this helps

WORK IN PROGRESS, later gasket being installed too late i guess. No faults stipulated when purchased only that the clock/radio display needed replacing and two of the tyres are getting low, Appart from that was assured it purred like a kitten and had run smoothly without missing a beat, to quote the seller. I was just going to put it down to experience or lack of but as I am typing this, something is rising inside me. BASTARD!
Where can I purchace a baseball bat that wont break on the first couple of swings
