hi all just brought my new to me 99 freelander di home however i have a problem when turning corners frontwards or backwards in gear or not the rear wheels become very stiff slowing the jeep down the person i bought it of said the vicous thing was replaced 1500 miles ago any thoughts the best way to describe it would be driving a 4x4 with diff locks on, on tarmac

Not sure if this is a help but mine does exactly the same thing! I had the VC and the IRD replaced about 2000 miles ago (for another reason altogether) and it did exactly the same before and after.... A discovery owner I know said he reckoned it was because the custom wheels I had were too big for the FL but he's full of it...

Maybe if ye did a nice wee hello in the "INTRODUCE YOURSELF" bit furst instead of jumpin' straight in and demandin' answers, then things may have bin a little different.

Did it do this when you test drove it?
The feeling of the car slowing down on full lock is a normal characteristic of a vehicle with a VCU. You get it on Suburus as well.
However if it is really bad, then your VCU needs to be tested as it may have seized. You can test it using two methods ... the Ashcroft method and the Landy Zone "Tippex Test".
For Ashcroft's go to www.ashcroft-tranmissions.co.uk. For the tippex test do a search on this forum for "tippex".

Hi Kieranw, Driving a Flander for the first time is a strange experience especially if you are used to being able to select/deselect 4wd. The stiffness you describe when turning either when travelling forwards or in reverse at low speeds is fairly typical because of the design of the drive configuration. However if the stiffness is accompanied by excessive noise from the transmission then you need to search the forum for threads regarding the testing procedures for the VCU. Dann
