When my pump failed the car just ran like a dog, ( like a couple of cylinders down ), and had very little power. I didnt notice any smoke from the rear, but I wasnt really looking.
It happened suddenly. As soon as I couldnt hear the pump running I put a multimeter across the electrical connector to the pump and it showed 12 plus volts. That was enough for me and I changed the pump which sorted the problem.

It's the smoke that's worrying me. Black doesn't sound right.

Just for information.
My plugs were swimming with oil at the ecu, so I opened it up and found none inside. ( 2002 model ).

To comfirm.

Has the original fault changed/got worse since the loom swap ?.

What I would do before anything else is check for voltage at the pump !.

Lift up the carpet in the boot and undo and remove the acsess plate.

Dissconnect and put a multimeter across it, looking for 12 ish volts.
