sorry mate, but you have no idea. why else do you think land rover sell rest of world spec vehicles designed for these places with the 300tdi engine in them as opposed to the td5 or puma?

fair enough in the uk you can run a puma or td5, but out in the bahamas or any other less developed country it is a hell of alot easier if you have an earlier motor

its not about trawling up the same ****, times changing, or driving old bangers, its about common sense, and understanding that there is a subtle differance between the uk and a less developed country
 
like driving a p38 in the middle of **** arse no where-screwed if electronics play up
 
OK, I just emailed my contact in the UK and asked him to look for a 300tdi.

What was the last year that they built them in the UK?

Anything special that I should tell him to look out for?

I wish I would have found this forum a couple months ago!

they last made the 300tdi in 1998, first made them in 1994. so to be honest with you there isnt a great deal of differance. if you find a low mileage 300tdi that hasnt been messed around and modified (because these are the ones that get put through the most ****!) you should be onto a winner as long as it has a good chassis and bulkhead. the 300tdi engines are good for 300 thousand miles so if you can find one for below 100k you are laughing.

one thing, land rover chassis rust like a bitch when exposed to salt. just how close are you to the sea. i know out in belize i have a friend of mine that lives in dangriga right by the coast, and he had a chassis rust through in 5 years because of it. he now uses galvanised chassis on all of his landys and they seem to withstand the salt pretty damn well
 
There is a company here that sprays rustproofing on vehicles,especially the under carriage, seems to work quite well.

I dont live near the ocean and the 90 will sleep in a garage at night.

I was trying to get the newest and least mileage that I could afford.

Is the TD5 the worst engine out of the 3? (2oo/3ootdi and TD5)
I still have time to back out, all that I will loose is the inspection cost,.


The TD5 is the best engine out of the 3 most torque, most power and pretty reliable apart from fuel pressure regulator, just make sure you service reguarly and you will have a great motor for years. 200 and 300 are older designs of deisels and yes simplier but not as good in my view.

just to recap - this guy is in the bahamas, this isnt someone with decent dealership facilities, or someone that will use it on a school run

what he needs is a decent simple motor, for ease of maintenance. the td5 may be better in some aspects, but in others it falls down

I maintain if there were no reason for the TD5 not to be used in less developed countries then land rover would equip their rest of world spec vehicles with them. the fact is they dont, they use the 300tdi, and with good reason. i have spent a fair amount of time in some relatively inhospitable places with vehicles, and would want a 300tdi over the td5 any day. and there are many many people on here with more experience when it comes to going out in the sticks than me. im soon going to be preparing my 110 to be shipped to belize and used as what amounts to a jungle limo truck, something that will go wherever i point it, get me, various equipment and researchers to places most other things wont reach.

and i am damned if im gonna use a td5 in that!

out of interest have you ever been anywhere other than europe in a land rover? i am not arguing the td5 engine is no good, im arguing it is less suitable in many parts of the world than a simpler engine.

i prefer the tdi engine, easier to sort out, plenty of torque and power, well known engine, with most mechanics able to work on them, easier to source parts in other parts of the world, cheaper to source parts, etc etc.

Yes i have been out of europe and to some very undeveloped coutries, all i'm saying is yes the 300 is simple and easy to work on a a good motor, the td5 is equaly a good motor and with the right tools as easy to fix as a 300, lets face it the g4 vechicles go on some pretty ruff stuff and they are all td5's.

g4 vehicles actually dont do a great deal of rough stuff, at least not compared with the camel trophy, which used the tdi series of engines to great effect.

and the g4 vehicles have a pretty comprehensive land rover back up, with many mobile workshop and technical backup vehicles, not to mention dozens of land rover mechanics in pursuit fitted for almost every eventuality.

I'm just saying i would take my td5 any where with the right tools and spares same as i would take my old series if it was in one peice any where with the right tools and spares same a 300 they can all be used any where with the right tools and spares and all have the pro and cons.

But i would buy the best my money and would have td5 over 300 any day.

and disregard the potential cost for sourcing parts should the need arise? i mean yea sure travel with a td5, this guy is planning on living with it, in an area where it is far easier to get 300tdi parts.

fair enough that is your call, but i would say your call is perhaps not the best judgement call in the world
 
the na is the simplest engine, so would an ex MOD not be suitable?That td5 in the pic looks very straight and unmolested and 45k milage aint nuffink. Could still be a good deal depending on spares/service local to the OP

I was shocked!
He really is a factory certified Rover mechanic from the UK with a really nice shop and all the equipment to do anything that could possibly go wrong with the TD5.
AND, he is a feally nice guy.
He even has a pretty good inventory of spare parts.

In the Bahamas we are used to having to FedEx parts in for vehicles, so I can live with that.

He really is a factory certified Rover mechanic from the UK with a really nice shop and all the equipment to do anything that could possibly go wrong with the TD5.
AND, he is a feally nice guy.
He even has a pretty good inventory of spare parts.

In the Bahamas we are used to having to FedEx parts in for vehicles, so I can live with that.

I just recieved the RAC report!

according to them this vehicle is a complete mess!

I have never seen such detail, very impressive and worth the money spent IMO.
They recomend that I do not purchase the vehicle in its present state and so does my UK contact.

So the search continues.
