To swap or not?..that is the Question!

It doesn't matter if the 110 is better, or the Disco is better, if your kind of off roading doesn't need the ultimate off roading ability. Many farms don't need this, since their tracks are reasonably flat, movements tend to be concentrated in the summer, and other vehicles are available. For example, if we need to top a field, a tractor + topper goes, not the landy. Also, gathering cows - taking the LR would be fuel inefficient and naturally the extra weight squashes the grass down more and damages the surface of cow tracks. The little 250cc quad, is ideal. I appreciate all farms are different and (for example) a hill sheep farmer might need more off road ability, than an arable unit. Other factors such as comfort, space, quietness, etc all come into it. For this reason, the advantage of the 110's extra ability isn't needed so a Disco might well be a better choice. Its been said before anyway.....LR did a range of products, for slightly different needs.

I think the OP just wanted to know if anyone would swap a 110 for a Disco.

Please dont think for a minute that I am trying to suggest that the D2 is better than the Defender at anything.

The point I made in my last post was that we have been using Landrovers in farming for as long as I can remember, and we,ve never had to put one through 3' of muddy water.

If I was going to have to go through 3' of muddy water, then , off course, I would rather be in the Defender. ( and as you rightly pointed out, it would only be so the carpets did,nt get wet in the Disco ! ).

I think that for most people to go through 3' of muddy water, they would probably have had to had go looking for it.

And again the general " jist " of your previous post would lead me to belive that you feel that the only vehicle suitable for off road work is the Defender, and Discovery,s are for pulling caravans !.

Please dont think that I am trying to dissagree with you Johnlad, I think its great that you work your Landrover, and put it to the use that it was ultimately designed to do.

I,ve got stuck in the Disco and been pulled out by a Defender 90. But I,ve also pulled a Defender out with my Disco.

Del.

it's not me who mentioned the off roading ability off any vehicle in the first instance, all of a sudden were only talking on the farm use! Buts lets
be honest the Disco was only LR's answer to cheap 4x4's from the far east
and it's main competion is Shogans(etc) so why you pitch it into battle with a proper iconic LR is beyond me:)

Of course some element of off road ability's going to come into it, otherwise we'd be talking about whether a Ford Mondeo is better than a Passat, etc.

Farm use - the OP's free to come back and clarify the nature of the off road ability he needs, or others can relate to other work roles of the LR.

The Discovery can be compared to a 90/110 because its a multi-purpose vehicle, and has the ability to do all that's required by many professional users of 4x4 vehicles. To say its market position is merely to compete against Shoguns etc is doing it a little bit of a disservice, and also Shoguns are able to fulfil the multi-purpose role, probably not as well as a LR but that's another debate for another day.

"Proper, iconic LR" - unfortunately, nostalgia doesn't mean much in a professional working vehicle where it needs to be able to do a job, cost efficiently, and earn its keep. 40 years ago 99% of farmers used a LR as their 4x4 car, now its probably around 50%-75%, so its not just me saying it, its (a proportion of) farmers who have decided to spend their hard earned elsewhere.

you've found a voice again now someone else is batting for you, admit it you lost the arguement on every point you originally made

the statement was'nt to discredit the D2's right to wear the oval badge, if you read the whole thread it was in response to a poster claiming the D2 was better off road than the 110, now not having like for like trials to test them on you have to rely on facts and figures, which is what was done also why would you want to drive your shagpile carpeted leather armchaired D2 through 3' off mud and water, i regularly do that with my 110 just open the door and hose it out to clean, whereas the D2 is more at home on the caravan towing circuit

Coz its fun............and no need to hose it after out coz the doors dont leak;)...................... (much) :D

and theres NO WAY I would swap my D2 for any defender

I admit I made a small technical error because I meant to say Disco 1 (not Disco 2) is better off road than 110. Its based on my recent experience at a pay & play site with me in my Disco 1 and the other guy in his 110. The vehicles were more/less standard except for tyres, mine were 265/75R16 (newish) and his were 33x12.5R15 (part worn). Off roading isn't all the same anyway, so its not a black and white issue but readers can relate their likely use to others' real world experience.

Secondly you've not come up with any constructive counter-arguments, but I'd welcome your real world experiences with both vehicles too.
