thinking of giving up on the damn thing

I'm not sure how much it costs to get the HG's done. I'd attempt it myself if mine ever went. It's not hard, just be methodical and take your time and follow the manual.

If you've got more problems than just a failed HG (like a cracked block) a new remanufactured engine with top hat liners from Turner engineering is £2700 plus the VAT! I got a quote from them last week as a matter of interest after mine overheated. I think I'd still do it though.

Of course you can buy an untested engine from a scrappy for eBay for about £500 or so.

I'm tending more towards a complete engine replacement from Turner rather than farting about with my HGs as my engine has done 170k anyway. Still got that slight whisper in the back of my mind that I ought to go for an L322 though if I'm going to go that far...

Good option on the face of it but you'll then own a car which is 100% unknown ...so get a damned good warranty, even if you have to pay extra for it! ;)

£1000 is expensive just had mine done top hat liners and camshaft bushes £860 including the VAT built it back up myself with new cam, followers ,oil pump ,ground crank put it back in as a 0 milage engine its awsum

Sounds like I need some of what you've got. Apparently cam followers were done, heads skimmed and valves decoked. Both gaskets done with payen now sat on my drive and not sure what to do. I wanted to spend a bit on it but didnt think gaskets would go so quickly. Can only assume a bodge job. Live and learn

if the head gaskets were done 5k ago sounds more like a cracked block what mine had same symtoms the only way to find out is heads off and a pressure test many garages dont .Simply do a hydro carbon test fail must be head gasket .Replace problem not resolved. The only fix is top hat liners once done is better than a brand new engine as the problem will never reoccur.Do a hydro carbon test if it fails almost certainly will be a cracked block (slipped liner if a tapping noise can be heard at running temperature) same fix for both

+1 - if the head gaskets were done property 5K miles ago - the problem isn't head gaskets and it probably wasn't before either.

Get some irontite ceramic engine fix and follow the instructions to the T. I suspect that will sort the block issue for 20K miles or so. Don't be talked into using K-seal instead.

Do they do the engine exchange service though? What I like about Turners (and I know they ain't cheap) is that your money buys you a newly built engine that you can just slot in. I haven't the time or workshop to be pulling down, sending off, re-building etc etc.
