To be honest the bomb hole, technically, is dead easy, SueW. You've done much worse terrain. The issue is, I think, because it's a flat to a sharp angle to a flat, so almost everybodys bumpers touch down and it 'feels' and looks so much worse than it actually is.

'course, a lot depends on water levels and temperature too, but it's grippy as a grippy thing, with very little chance of sliding over a chasm or anything actually going wrong unless you run at it stupidly.

You, and your vehicle, can do it easily ...

I think to know what your vehicle and yourself is capable of is the real reason. ..the fear is there the first time as you can't see the bottom as you drive off but once you realise that you didn't die , I certainly wanted to do it again to try to correct the mistakes I made the previous times

Having someone that has done it before sitting in with you the first time is really useful too. I lost my virginity there with funkykipper :D

I agree with you that doing it with the two of you wouldn't have been the best idea...especially as it was the dreaded last lane....and we all
know what happens then :eek:


Maybe if kipper runs another trip ..he'll do strata .. and youll get the opportunity to do it when theres more support around for any mishaps that might occur :)

Anything standard over 100 inches long I think will ground out. A 110 with a tow bar is going to struggle.
Power on when exiting will likely show up any weakness in the half shafts or diff which obviously means if one breaks it's hard going to do the rest of the route in two wheel drive.

The breakages that I've heard of from the bombhole are, I guess, probably like you say, but I reckon that's more a function of available grip (lots!) and doing it wrong 'cos people think there's no grip .. the old Clarkson 'MORE POWER ...' syndrome. It's what happened to me first time, but I only bent the end of my rear bumper, 'cos I didn't power it out hard. ;)

Doing it nice, steadily and evenly makes it a doddle. Watching someone do it first makes it even easier, the hardest bit is getting over the top 'cos you simply can't see where you're going, so need to line it up beforehand and believe in the force ...

Going up it is probably and arguably easier than going down.
