Hi all, hopefully someone has a bit of info at the back of their minds somewhere. This has been asked many times before, but a search hasn't revealed a definitive answer, just a part number, which I already know.
There are two thread types for the 200TDi temperature sender, fine and course. One of them is 16mm x 1.5. I don't know what the other is. I have bought a Durite gauge which has a 1/8 nptf sender and now have a fine collection of 9 adapters, none of which match the original thread - pictures attached. Has anyone taken a pitch gauge to the sender to find out WTF the fine thread actually is! If its any help, the part number is PRC8001.

Thanks Retroanaconda. I'm still a bit baffled - one of the adapters is supposed to be a 5/8 - but the teeth per inch is way off. My UNF tpi gauge says the original sender is 26tpi, but the adapter is 18tpi.
I don't have a metric TPI gauge, but the 1/8 nptf to metric adapters all look far too coursely threaded - around 18tpi. Any other thoughts welocome.
 
Thanks MR BFG, that ties in with what I've found so far. But as you can see, the thread on the sender is very fine. I wonder if there's a fine metric thread equivalent?
 
Something's a bit odd for sure. I bought a replacement sender from Steve Parker, who told me their sender (which fitted) was 16mm x 1.5. However the 16mm x 1.5 adapter has a completely different thread. I may just end up drilling and taping the old sender in the photo - I know from an on-line search it's been done before.
 
Zeaphod, I had exactly the same problem. Steve Parker sold me two bags of different adaptors, and there was one in each bag that I needed. As you can see from the pic, I have my sender unit (SPA bit still 1/8 NPT) going into an adaptor, which in turn goes into another adaptor, which goes into the 'stat housing. Works fine.

Cheers Hard Drive, at least I know it's not just me. I have learnt something along the way as always. The 1/8 NPT senders have 27tpi (I measured 26, but my eyesight is fooked). From an obscure thread in the U.S of A it seems the original is a metric fine thread, at 16mm x 1. I'll PM you.
 
Well I've had a dig through my email history - Steve Parker actually said the fine thread is 16mm X 1, which is as rare as rocking horse poo - typical old Land Rover fitting.
They have come back to me though, and have found what I need after Hard Drive was so helpful.
 
Thanks again, and I should mention that the response to my query to Steve Parker was fast and helpful. I can't help thinking that someone is missing an opportunity to sell 1/8 to m16x1 adapters.
 
Well, the bag from Steve Parker turned up today, it contained two packs of Durite adapters - the two I had already bought, none of which are m16x1. GRRR. I've now spent at least £50 on adapters. In a red mist I ordered a M16x1 die. Then I thought, feck it I'll have a go at making my own from the old sender (this one was in the head when I got the engine).
So off to Screwfix, bought a cheap tap and die set which has a 1/8 NPT tap. Then off with the top and tail of the sender:

Poke out the innards then drill and tap it - I used 8 then 8.5mm drills, then slowly wound the tap in and out until it was fully in, use a bit of oil to ease things:

Just need to add a bit of PFTE tape on the new 1/8 sender for sealing:

And bob's your uncle, one 1/8NPT to M16x1 converter with sender attached. Total cost £24.99, and I have a useful set of cheapo (carbon steel) taps and dies - which came with a thread gauge to confirm the pitch. If anyone else is in the same pickle, post me your sender and I'll sort it for you. Once the m16x1 die arrives, I'll try to convert some of the many adapters I have to the fine metric thread.

I'm sure that's how I did mine. The problem with things like this is time passes and then you can't remember where you got the part from a few years ago or is that just me?

It's possible that there could be a fine metric thread equivalent for the sender you're working with. I'd suggest consulting a hardware store or a specialized fastener supplier for options.
