So last year i froze due to a number of issues with the TD5 which included a thermostat that was stuck open. Is there anything that I can do to stay warm? Is it safe to block out part of the the radiator with a cardboard or something similar. Would disconnecting the viscous fan be a dangerous thing to do?

Why no try both, nothing will be dangerous unless u let it, keep a an eye on your engine temp gauge and see what suits u, as it all depends on ambient temperature at the time and driving style, traffic or open road etc, etc..

I have seen you can buy rad muffs for the disco 2. I have one on the defender but it has not got cold enough for it to make a difference.
I believe that the temp guage is not a true analogue so it goes up in jumps and the next one up from normal is friying hot is it not?
My td5 is warm and toasty but I know that once the really cold weather kicks in that the heater struggles. I was wondering if it was worth while flushing the matrix out or thinking that May block the unit.

Oh dear that sounds iffy, I would think its time to fit a supplementary gauge on the dash.

Anyone considered a diesel pre heater. Not so common in the uk but look easy enough to fit. Search the auction sites for a thermotop z or c with the attached water pump. A simple plumb into the water system and fuel system and either go for auto operation with ambient sensor or ad a remote. It's on my list of mods

OMI i would just fit a new thermostat and just make sure you bleed the water system. I have just renewed my antifreeze and all nice and warm, but then i have the climate control one......nice......sorry

I took the fan off several years ago, no problems so far, been down through France in Summer and sat for hours in London traffic this summer.

I had a webasto diesel fuelled cab heater in my defender and it was awesome. It was just like having a domestic fan heater in the cab. The disco though was warm as toast last year.
