Can any one shed any light on my problem as follows.
Got a 06 freelander 1 td4 takes a good 20 seconds to fire from cranking engine over once it’s running it’s fine no loss in power no smoke tried changing camshaft sensor still same tried pulling plugs off injectors one at a time every time I unplug one it runs rough plug it back in and it’s fine. Pump inside osr wheel arch seems to be running fine while running I unscrewed drain plug from bottom of pump till it cut out bled system. Still same problem always started with just a few cranks before. Any help to shed any light greatly received done a leak off test no fuel coming from injectors with just ignition on or cranking. When it fired up had a lot of run off from no2 injector (from left hand side) next to nothing from the 1/3/4. Sorry for long post just love my hippo and what it starting like before.

If No2 is leaking back, then it can stop the rail pressure from building enough to inject correctly. When it fires, is there a lot of smoke which clears quickly?

It should start fine at this time of year without glow plugs .

If it's not smoking once it fires, then it most likely to be the pressure regulator O rings being split or leaking. No smoke suggest no fuel in the chamber, which would be due to the regulator bypassing fuel, instead of raising the rail pressure.

Would the o rings cause a hissing noise from the front on the engine as noticed a sound like air escaping once I’ve turn the key on for about 1.5/2 mins then stops sounds like it’s coming from fuel pump on front of the engine sprayed soapy water around and couldn’t see any visible signs of a leak

Hi mine had much the same problem starting after checking most of what you did ,I took the fuel pump of and renewed all the rings ,bit fiddly but it now starts first time every time, turns out they were perished and I think letting the fuel run back this taking ages to start , might be worth checking

Thanks for info will give it a go anything is worth a go as I’m at a loss now got a new filter on order as was told that might be restricted also which pump did you remove the one on engine or one inside the rear wheel arch ?

Hi I changed the one at the rear wheel never fixed the problem so got a o ring kit from eBay £12 and put them on and bingo job done ,they say you need to buy a tool to get the pump out ,if you’re quite handy you can make the tool quite easily, that’s the inj pump at front.

Don't attempt to remove the high pressure fuel pump without the special sprocket holding tool. If the sprocket drops into the timing case, your in for a world of pain. For a the £20 the tool costs, it's simply not worth taking the risk.

Besides there's no need to remove the whole HP pump, if you're just doing the regulator O rings, as there's plenty of room, once the starter has been removed.
