tailgate won’t lock

Hi has anyone had this problem i can find lots of information regarding tailgates that wont open but can’t find any information regarding a tailgate that won’t close i have checked that their is no obstructions the tailgate closes all the way but it does not latch on,this problem is on a 2008 freelander2 any help would be much appreciated

It's probably the latch assembly( normally a spring inside has failed), your best be is to replace it.

Hi thanks for that removed mechanism all springs looked good and in place replaced mechanism closed tailgate and it locked trouble now is it won't open the plot thickens any ideas

I did suggest replacing it.

When locks start to fail, it's a warning that something is up.

It's difficult to see if all the strings are fitted, as one could become detached and dissappear, so wouldn't be visibly broken.

Try pushing down on the tailgate as the lock release button is pressed, which should take the load off the lock.

Once you have the tailgate open, then replace the lock assembly.

Point taken you did say replace mechanism will now buy new one and fit it thanks for the advice
