There seems to be a massive price range with these.
Paddocks sell one for £85 and on the other end of the scale there is the mantec one at around £200.
obviously i would like to pay the cheaper price but are they made to a poor quality that i will need to replace it in a couple of years.
I dont carry passengers so it isnt essential that it opens with the rear door but i dont want to buy something that will be rattling around over every bump in the road and will need replacing in a couple of years?
Any advice welcome
 
Hey Only1cliff, I have one of the cheaper wheel carriers on my 90. it is triangulated with a mounting point on the tub and chassis. It has a lever and pin hinge setup with notches in the base to secure the wheel. Mine is real tight and I dont get any real noise from it when I am off road. It has a grease fitting on the bottom (not the top) to keep everything lubed up. The only problem I am having is the powder coat is coming off and rust is getting under it. I just took a pudy knife and scraped that stuff away and painted it in a few coats of enamal and it looks good. I guess what I am trying to say if I have had good luck with mine and I would recomend. I have only 31" tires so there is not a ton of weight on mine. might be something to consider. Hope this helps but like you I am a junior member to the sight - doug

Cheers for the replys, with the one that opens with the rear doors from paddocks thats shown in the above 2 pics is it a case of re using my existing wheel carrier on the door and cutting the support bolts off and using that as a plate to support the new carrier to? If that makes sense
 
IIRC
It unbolts from the inside and you remove the three long studs and then bolt the new carrier through the plate and bolt up from the inside

Since I was only checking out Paddocks today, how secure are their carriers - that is from a theft angle? I was also looking at the £85 + VAT ones.

ive one here, going fo 50 nicker, not paddocks though.

took it off me back door, spare wheel on the bonnet where it should be
 
The £85+VAT one is either a copy of or is a Pivlock carrier made by Bullivant Engineering.
As long as you have decided that you don't need the option of opening the rear door from the inside then it is a sound piece of kit which has been around for a very long time.:)
I bought one for my S111 SWB V8 back in the 1980's and it carried my 9.00x16 spare over all sorts or terrain for many years without problems. Apart from lubrication of the pivots the only maintenance you need to do is to check that the rubber buffer is pressed hard against the rear door because if it isn't the slot at the base wears rapidly which means it rattles but if you check the pressure and re-shim if necessary (using washers) and it will be 100% reliable. Based on my ownership you should only have to do that once every couple of years or so!;)

No carrier is any more secure than any other, it is all down to you.

Use locking wheel-nuts (a set of three different ones if you can) but that is nothing to a determined thief so a DECENT padlock & chain threaded through the wheel & carrier is your best insurance. Don't scimp here so buy a DECENT motorcycle one, make sure it fits tight and isn't swinging loose. Lastly fit a wheel cover to cover the whole lot over and away from prying eyes.
 
I've got one of the Paddocks ones up for grabs. It was on the landy when it got rear ended. The bottom rail needs to be bent straight (it's not too bad) and the paint touching up where it bent.
