strange noise down the engine ( p38 )

hi all
today i heard a strange noise coming from down the engine ... when the car is on neutral mode the noise disappears , but when i put the reverse mode or the drive mode the noice comes back again ... i checked the engine while it's on .. there's nothing from above the engine ... i don't know if it's an exhaust problem !!
any idea please ..

sounds like g/box if its only there in drive/reverse! have you checked fliud, had any warnings of g/box fault?

no , i hadn't any warning of g/box fault !
is the exhaust a main reason for such a noise ?

It's not likely to be your exhaust as if it was it would be there all the time.

sorry i don't know what is a " converter flange " what is it ? and what is its job ? and where is its place ?

It's a metal plate, a part of flywheel. Replacing = removing the engine.

hi v12 ...
it's a pleasure for me to tell you that i found the problem ... it's within the exhaust box ... i found the flange , when i read the manual ... but i took my range to a specialist of exhaust pipe and there we found the problem and we repared it ... it cost just 6 $ ...
now i'm really glad ... i was afraid from the gear box .

was it the heat shield vibrating on the centre box? i was just goiong to say this and see your thread that it had been done.
this happened to me, the welds holding the heat shield cracked and it virated at certain engine speeds, mine was quiet in D or R. noisey as hell in P or N.
i pushed a small piece of pipe between it and the box, has since been replaced completely.
