When you speak about "to measure the play in the gears on the crown wheel with the pinion flange"... Is this what the video is talking about when it talks about "measuring backlash" in this video ?

Yes, I was talking about measuring backlash. This video isn't the best for this. For a start, I would clamp the pinion flange so that it couldn't move before measuring it, but yes, that is what I was talking about.
Here is a much better video but I am aware that it is in English!
