got the engine out tonight

so much easier when you remove the tunnel ...........

split the gearbox and removed the 6 cyl bellhousing today - all looks good so far, but i'm waiting for the new seals and gaskets to arrive before i assemble it back up

also as i was told the clutch plate from the 6 cyl fits into the 300tdi - even managed to use the gearbox input shaft as a clutch alignment tool
 
tried to fit the engine tonight but the turbo oulet fouls the bulkhead - im going to try again later in the week without the turbo on

it must be a 6 cylinder thing - i can't see a way of moving the gearbox forward - i thought at 1st i could but i think the chassis are different between the 4 cyl and 6 cyl models

you can see in this picture it still needs to go back 6" to the bellhousing

The gearbox mounts are a couple of extra inches rearwards on a 6 cylinder compared to a 4 cylinder, and the engine mounts are a few inches forwards too. Numbers are scribbled in my green bible but I don't have it to hand at present. I don't know of any other differences in the chassis other than those.
 
Mate - I wish you could change this to "conversion" thread - cos sure as hell isn't a resto! I know Mr Dibnah didn't give a monkeys about his landy but no way would he have dumped a diesel in a Garrett!

do you think i'd be able to redrill my mounts to the 4 cyl position to move the engine/gearbox forward? if i got a couple of 4 cyl props?
 
Think they'd need cutting off the chassis and welding where the 4 cylinder mounts are rather than anything being redrilled. I have no idea if doing this would give you clearance for a 300TDi though, I've never done it before! The measurements for the 4 cylinder chassis are all in the green bible if you wanted to see how far out things are.
 
might have to do it that way then, i'll pull the turbo off and see how it sits in the original position 1st - would be better if i dint have to get new props yet

No mate - what you're doing is wrong WRONG WRONG! My posts are positive - just pointing out that your avatar is ironic to say the least! And your thread [1st post you say NOTHING about conversion] should not be called "resto"...................... still when you see an original 6 cylinder Safari selling for 10k+ you might just get it!

I have seen one for sale for £35k i think it was on car & classic, and i don't care, as Bob Marley once said "money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end" - i don't have long left on this earth, i would like to build a 300TDi 109 and thats what i'm doing - i think it will make me happier.

this thread isn't about the engine conversion it's about the full restoration and from the definition in the dictionary

restoration - the action of returning something to a former owner, place, or condition.
synonyms: repair, repairing, fixing, mending, refurbishment, reconditioning, rehabilitation, rebuilding, reconstruction, remodelling, redecoration, revamping, revamp, makeover, overhaul;


thats what i'm doing returning it to it's former condition of being roadworthy.

the part i was referring you to was the "purists please don't moan" i even said please yet you still moan

I'm glad you asked that because I have no idea either, something to do with turbos?

Oh and it's your own van do what you like to it, It could be worth a million quid if rebuild as original but if you want pink glitter paint and monster tyres on it then so be it, it's yours to do as you want. I draw the line at chequer plate though lol.
 
you're right mate, it's yours and YOU should do what makes YOU happy - I just hope having turned a smooth, quite motor into a rough noisy one does make you happy - vandalism just annoys me that's all - but good luck with your project.......................... of course it's not actually yours - you're just the custodian for future generations, future generations who'll have to undo parts of your "restoration"
