Can anyone tell me if these steps will fit my defender please? My garage have agreed a fit only relationship. Two of the previous posters and myself aren't on the same wavelength, and it feels to me like the posts are getting a bit sarcastic. How are the garage going to fit the support brace to the chassis when it appears to me that the tank is in the way? Cheers.

I don't have sidesteps fitted to my 90 but have seen them fitted to many vehicles since the year dot so I should imagine that unless they specifically state that they are not suitable for earlier vehicles with the underseat fuel-tank (pre-TD5) then they will fit ok.
Looking at the photo your tank appears to be standard so no problems there (the bottom of the tank is higher than the bottom of the chassis rail). The stay that bolts between the back of the step and the chassis has a kink which means it drops down and I would suggest this is to allow clearance for the tank (a straight bar would be stronger).

If you want to be 110% certain then I would suggest that you would have to beg / borrow / buy a step and hold it in position (or just search out a vehicle with them fitted and look underneath) but my gut feeling is that they will fit with no problems.

I have fitted a standard folding side step (as per the posts above) to my 90 (for the missus) and I am pretty sure the standard folding step will fit yours.
The link bar goes from the step to the chassis, where it's fixed by drilling and inserting a rivnut. The top of the step bracket is bolted through the sill. A garage should be able to fit one in an hour if you don't have a rivnut tool (they are easy to make).

As far as I'm concerned I've been nothing but helpful and in a polite way. I've also spent a great deal of my time writing the post above and editing pictures for you. You have repaid me with sarcasm, yet you claim it's everyone but you.
For example.
By questioning my posts (thank you) you might have cleared something up, better saving me from being ripped off by a garage by questioning what I've been told by others. In addition, where others have used the word 'series' to me, you have suggested 'series' is confusing (thank you). If I had my facts straight you wouldn't have taught me something and I wouldn't have learned :0) Try not to get frustrated with people who aren't as expert as you. If a patient said "I've got a sore food pipe, an itchy arse and my head won't fit in the bog so I can be sick", a good GP wouldn't reply with "It's an esophagus, oesophagus (if you want to be pure English), anus, crack, bum or s&*T hole ... and don't be stupid! Your head is like a pinhead and would fit in any toilet or latrine on the planet, even one situated in the en suite of a bedroom in a doll's house". I'm learning, but there's no way I'm rote learning a 50 page pdf glossary of mechanical terminology before I ask a question on this forum. I've only just learned the emotion faces. Looks like you're doing a proper job on your car btw. I bet it'll look brill when it's finished. Also, with these steps (which I like best), does the brace arm go through the diesel tank?

I'm done with trying to help you out. Good luck.

Think he means me ... coz I'm sensitive like that ....

Well, you shouldn't be so sensitive ;) Cos I think he meant both of us.
I didn't mean both of you. In fact 8 hours has past, and things come to light which means you were both quite right to be thinking 'wtf is this tit on about?'. The bloke who sold me the car, saying it couldn't have steps without great modification at the cost of 400 quid because of the petrol tank, forgot to tell me that he meant it in relation to ice is ice steps or something only. He generalised 'steps'. I've bought what you suggested today, They will fit no probs. Cheers.
