Hello,

I've got a 1988 Land Rover 90 that has no speakers/radio/amplifier.
I'm trying to think of a project to do to keep myself occupied and was thinking of fitting some speakers etc.

I'm new to the world of audio solutions and know that whatever i install will need to be LOUD to be heard over the engine.

I guess that I'm looking for an AMP, set of speakers, & sub? I'n not fussed about having Radio or even a head unit. Could always install something simple like a Bluetooth receiver behind the dash and install a switch/volume knob etc.

Has anyone done anything similar or know what sort of equipment would be recommended.

I'm looking for something simple but loud.

Thanks in advance

Do you have any sound deadening? I haven't on my 1997 110 and I have to turn the radio up so loud that it hurts. Doesn't matter how good your system is, you're still going to crank it up to high to be comfortable.

Nah, i don't have any sound deadening really, all that I've seen seems to be very expensive. And I can't really imagine how much of a difference it could make.

I've added a fair amount of sound deadening and altered the final drive ratio on my Defender 90 TD5 and although it's still noisier than our family car (a Merc C Class), I can hear the radio reasonably well. (And my wife is always telling me I'm deaf.)

I use the Defender as my everyday drive and it's reasonably civilised now its got some sound proofing. I keep thinking of adding more though. The roof panels and doors need some...

Look at sound deadening first and then an ordinary radio should be OK?

You need to put some noise suppression material in before your music otherwise I think you’ll be disappointed.
It does make a real difference.
I’ve ‘Dynamat ‘ ed the whole of my 110 Ute and whilst not cheap I don’t now need to shout!

you don't need an amp, a normal radio head unit and a pair of good speakers mounted in the headlining net to your ear is more than sufficient. This is the setup I have run for years now and only recently added sound deadening.

I put lots of lead flashing tape, all over the inside, lined much of that with Eva foam mats. Then clad the inside at the back with wood.
It much quieter, warmer, and I don't need to turn up the sound.
Behind the driver is a fixed partition keeping the heat in the front. Behind the passenger the partition is removable.
Above the roof side joint the partition is fixed right across the landy. Into that is mounted the speakers. One behind each person just behind their head, you don't need to turn the radio up loud as its so close..

Can't understand all this "have to turn it up really loud otherwise you can't hear it" business.
My 300TDi 90 soft-top is completely bare (i.e. no sound deadening or carpets) and has a normal radio / CD with speakers under the dash and behind centre bulkhead. You have to turn it up a bit at motorway speeds of 65-70MPH (probably to half volume) but I can hear my radio & audiobooks perfectly satisfactory (audiobooks being a good indicator as they are talking which would otherwise be easily drowned out).

I have a UE megaboom 3 jammed into the dashboard of my Td5! Charges via a USB i have plugged into the cigarette lighter and i've found it to be plenty good enough, with the added bonus of always having a party speaker with me for when the beers come out.

Buy one of those and a YETI cooler with the money it would take to do a factory grade speaker install and you'll never not have friends.
I HAVE however started to add some sound insulation in the form of one of the Noisekiller kits. ( https://www.nkgroup.co.uk/product/full-land-rover-soundproofing-kit/ )
it's made a difference already - and i've not even stuck half of it down as i'm still playing around with what goes where.
Noise reduction is always going to be expensive, but not doing it could cost you your long term hearing.
While a noisy interior is certainly characterful, when the technology exists to do something about it, you probably should.

To be fair, mine is particularly noisy because it only has half an exhaust. The rear half.

Don't Waste your time. Just get a big blue tooth speaker that charges vis USB and use that. Can easily take it out to deter thieves, they are just as loud as most car sound systems and a lot less hassle.
