That's the plan :D

It's actually quite a simple/brutal beast!

Must admit it's the first time I've seen one apart .. and indeed doesn't look too ping####itty ... I have an old 200000+miles transfer box in the yard, kept meaning to strip it to clean/fettle/learn so might have a crack at it now .. ;)

When I say now, I mean, 'add it to the queue' .. ;)

Getting there now, that's all the parts/casings cleaned up and ready to go:

All I need is a seal and gasket kit from Ashcroft, and I need a speedo drive as I damaged the one out of the 22D box.

Now maybe JM can help here perhaps (please) ?

I have 33" tyres fitted and the speedo under reads by about 5mph on the 28D suffix D box fitted standard in my disco v8

The 22D suffix C box out of a 90 had a yellow speedo gear but I have damaged it.

Any idea which speedo gear I should buy to correct my speedo?

Also, do they have a new/different worm gear or do they all use the same worm gear?

Any help appreciated cos I'm struggling with the speedo gear problem.

Thanks! :)

blue speedo is about as far as you can go( frc3310 )suitable for 7.50 x 16 tyres, the worms are all the same so no choice ,whats front intermediate shaft hole like

Hi James

Thanks for your speedy help

Done some calcs and my gearing by tyres is approx 12% over

I just removed speedo gear from old 1.2 box and I have the frc9339 black 23 tooth gear

If I remove 12% from 23 i get 20.24 tooth, so blue 20 tooth would be correct for me :D

Just read something online that only yellow and black suit v8 models because of larger diameter speedo cable but hopefully that's not true for discovery, or I'll have to make some modifications!!

Front intermediate shaft hole is good, round and true, I had read that they can elongate, this 1.4 box looks to be in very good condition, centre diff not very worn and all bearings reuseable, so I'm confident casing is good to use also, have checked hole for roundness and it seems fine

Thankyou JM :)

Hi James

Yeah I read that black was for the transducer, well for some reason mine had it fitted, I noticed that the yellow that came out of the 22D was a slightly larger square hole.

Anyway, have ordered a blue gear and will make sure it fits properly! :D

Thanks again!! :)

Have decided not to strip diff because I am trying to keep costs down where possible and it feels good (less play than my current box)

I would like a Quaife centre diff but can't justify expense right now, doing this job on a tight budget so decided diff was ok for the minute

Am I wrong again? :p

can i ask what else your changing on yours (if anything) iv just got a 1.4 for mine due to 33s and mine leaking..isnt there something about it being cross drilled?..i want to make sure its right before i put it in lol

That's the input gear mate that is cross drilled on later models, basically any case which wasn't fitted with the drilled input gear will need one!

Otherwise I am fitting a gasket and seal set, that's it, but when I took my 1.2 case out a few years back I fitted new input gear and bearings, new input shaft seal and new output flanges and seals.

Basically to cure the bad backlash problem and stop the flange leaks.

I decided to full strip my 1.4 box just to have a look and clean it all but it appears to be in very good used condition so I'm happy to put it back together, have replaced the input gear though due to wear as expected and the front output flange is scored too so has been replaced with a good used one I have in stock.

Basically input gear, output flanges and appropriate seals (ideally viton) will take a tired well used box back to good well used condition.

Cheers :)

Yeah it's a suffix c box so it was gasketed, tbh I prefer gaskets, but I know that Ashcroft for instance don't use gaskets on any of their boxes.

I had the big nut off the end of the diff assembly the other day (it was loose) so I removed all the gears etc to check for diff spindle wear etc, there was a slight step in the diff spindle but not too bad.

Now is the time to check of course, can't remember why I didn't take the diff apart when I had all the gears off it but I'm sure there's a reason, I'll have another look at it today.

Why do I need new thrust washers?

Wooo gasket kit arrived in time :D

Looked at thrust washers for the diff, still decided it doesn't need it, I'm happy with the diff wear as it is and I'm up against the clock to throw this thing back together, which I will be doing tonight!
