Hello strangers!

Not had a post on here for a month, and not posted any mods or anything for ages!

Have had a couple threads on the go regards other stuff, that mystery running problem, the coolant leak, and a second alternator which I'm still wanting to do but not getting involved just now (not looking to spend much cash on the car at the moment tbh)

ANYWAY here's something I've just done:

Been wanting wireless winch control for a while. I have a switch near the steering wheel which i use when driving, but it's a bit of a PITA when we're just wrapping the winch rope or rigging up etc cos you have to go back to the car. The wander lead still functions but it is heavily uncool. And not that practical.

Price and unreliability has put me off wireless to date, but a while ago I spotted a pair of controllers and a receiver on eBay, new, delivered from hong kong for about £9 all in!!

Had em on watch list for a while due to not wanting to spend, but thought bollocks to 9 quid so got em bought!

Arrived in about 2 weeks, but if you're not in a rush it's better than buying the same product for 35 quid in the uk.

Anyway, I managed to fit the receiver in the contactor box which is mounted on the winch. It wouldnt quite fit in in it's original casing, so removed that, wrapped up the internals in insulating tape and popped it in there.

The PCB wasn't jelly dipped nor was the original casing sealed, so if it is gonna get wet now it wont be any worse off than its original casing. Probably better wrapped tight in tape tbh.

And if it blows up them hey ho. Not gonna waste time jelly dipping something that is likely to fail soon anyway.

So I put it all back together and tested it, there's about a 1 second delay from letting the button go to the winch stopping. If you've got a fast winch this is quite a lot of line, which isnt ideal. But ive got my direct switch inside, the wireless will be used for prep more than anything. Handy for when I'm on my own and I want to control the winch away from the vehicle etc.

Cheers :)

Cheaper to buy the controllers than the winch, so I'd recommend buy them first and get the feeling for it :D

Yeah tried that methodology.

Have a V8 badge on the back, dual batteries that go no where and used knickers from Holly Valance.

Still have a diesel with one working battery and my misses doesn't have an Australian ascent - bummer

Im jealous!! That is a sweet lookin disco.i hope to get mine lookin like that, or even close. Problem is if im honest im mechanically retarded!?! An in my opinion, id keep the wheel off the back 2

Just noticed this whilst lying underneath washing the disco down. Have just got back from a 2 day laning trip, noticed a slight knock on day 1 but it went away again.

VERY lucky I didn't lose the mount altogether up **** creek in the middle of a rock and a hard place.

Gonna look for a cheap good axle case first, have already welded new spring mount and heavily repaired damper mount on same side as this. Rest of axle seems fine but the diff pan has been heavily grinded, plus I think it's very difficult to get the geometry perfect when repairing!!!

Anyone got a good axle case local??

Cheers!

Gaffa tape? :D

Ah that's nice.

What is it about us guys, we spend hours and hours locked in a shed playing with our 4x4's, we spend all our available money on new shiny parts and then suddenly we post pictures of us on our own in a field making dinner.

I hope the misses hasn't done a runner lol

PS what light bar is that on the roof?

thats just his kitchen bitch lol... mines 20 in oct, shoulda said n we could have had a joint bday in summer :D. my front one went last time at biggin, n mate did same - it came completely off. funny as fook to watch him drive it, like a snake haha

cant ya just get the mount welded

hi mate

yes, quite easily i could grind it off and weld another on. have already temp repaired the one thats on it.

just that the rest of the axle is fairly crusty, and ive been so busy recently with a house move and getting a business off the ground that ive just parked the disco in the corner for a while.

when it needs doing, it'll gte done, but if i can get a cheap axle case in the meantime i dont even have to get the mig out.

cheers :D
