So, after having a tapping from the engine manifest itself when at running temp for the last couple of months, I had it looked at yesterday.
Rocker cover off the right hand bank to check valve gear first & all looks well there.
Borescope down the spark plug holes show a clean lip at the top of the cylinder on no.3 (right where I pinpointed the source of the tap from).
This is the same cylinder that had a 0.5mm lip when the heads were done a couple of years ago. Liner didn’t look like it was moving at the time as the lip was carbon'ed up.
Seems it’s started moving again…

So, time to ponder what to do next. Sell it as spares / repair & move onto something else?

Feck that!

The P38 is a keeper. So a Top Hat block is the way forward.
Now, considering my mechanic states that my valve gear is in exceptional condition & seeing it myself yesterday I was surprised but it does get oil changes every 5-6k. So I’m thinking along the lines of a short engine or just block & pistons.

So, really just after some recommendations on where to source one from. Have researched the likes of Turners, ACR, V8 Developments (not considering RPI). All seem to be around the £2k mark. Any others I’ve not considered?
Also tempted by a cam upgrade Turners are doing a short engine with Kent cam for £2195.

PS. This will be the 3rd engine in 154k miles….diesel boys will have a field day with this :behindsofa:

If it is any comfort, I bit the bullet and got a Turner short block a year ago and am very happy with it.

My sole regret is that I didn't bite harder and get the full engine .... I hadn't factored in the labour and miscellaneous parts cost to build the short engine up.

My mech has quoted £1300 tops for all work with a short block (LPG adds to the workload). Obviously less with a full engine. Just seems a waste exchanging a good set of heads from mine though.
V8 Developments are quoting £400 extra for a full engine over a short block though so food for thought?

I got mine top hatted by hallbeckengineering ,top job, around £1000 then I built the engine up using new shells ,rings, tappets, cam, oil pump, timing gears, chain, etc, cost a few quid but well worth it,done almost 10k on it ,no problems, there was like steel time Serts in place of the head bolt threads ,a lot stronger and less likely to rip a thread out ,I also used arp head stud kit,for piece of mind,a piper cam,4.0l Pistons on the 4.6l rods for higher compression,:D:D

Consider it what you will, it's better than thousands for the other options. If it does the job.

Trouble is, the engine really needs to be pulled to do this with any competence & to get the liner back in position. By the time you've messed around drilling, tapping & risking fracturing liners, may as well have the block machined & top hatted i would have thought?

How are you going to fracture a liner? Your money do what you want with it. :D:D

Sticking a drill through it wont do it any favours, neither will bolting through an already fragile aluminium block into cast iron. Cant imagine it would last very long either. A real bodge TBH :D

I don't know if GBP 1,300 is good or not.

You could ask him to separate his labour:

1. For old engine out and new back in
2. For the rebuilding
3. for the parts - studs, gaskets, your new cam, oil pump gears, timing cover checking, rocker gear, testing and fettling your heads .....

The full engine comes with heads, all pushrods set up, timing cover?

Others seem to have managed it without problems. But you do what you want to. Factory repair for spinning thrust bearings on the Triumph 2.5 PI was a PK screw with the head ground square. That seemed to work ok. :D:D

It's seems about right from what i can see on V8 rebuilders sites etc.
The quote was based on me supplying a short block, including removing mine, fitting new block, fitting new heads & setting up all all parts, timing chain, gaskets, bolts etc. The LPG refit is also included. Still considering a full engine now bearing in mind the cost difference seems reasonable. Will see how much this reduces the labour by.

sorry to hear your bad news mate makes my valley gasket replacement today seem trival, my mates brother had his engine after it dropped a liner he also had an lpg convertion done and valve saver fitted i think his final bill was
£5.5 k
