Ok, it's nearly time for me to look at giving my brakes a bit of a going over.
10 " front drums, not brilliant but adequate, but there are alternatives
Disc brake conversion - not an option as too expensive, so what is involved and how good an upgrade are
Fitting a servo? - anyone done this? Any other modifications needed? Approx cost?
Fitting 11" brakes - again anyone done this? What's involved? Approx cost?
Any other options that are available or what have you done to make. Your brakes more effective:confused:

ok one question, is your S2 an earlier one without the cutout in the wing to clear the pedalbox mounted servo ??

if it has the cutout you can easily fit the S3 servo pedal box

you can also fit a dual line master cylinder for 10" brakes

and for even more stopping power i'd then fit 11" backplates from a REAR axle as these use the same size slave cylinders as 10" front brakes plus they remain SLS and so are easier to bleed

don't bother with the shuttle valve (PDWA) just plumb the front line to the rear axle and the rear line to the front axle

properly bled up and adjusted you'll then have brakes that will get your rear wheels hovering at 60-70mph under heavy braking, just be aware that it will try to swap ends if you're not careful

the bonus with these bigger brakes and twin adjusters is you can easily get your pedal to minimal travel and the shoes will last longer with less frequent need to adjust them

the downside is when wading, i'm pretty certain they take longer to dry out and while they are drying they'll "pull" even more violently than the 10" brakes when applied

this is how my 88" is set up, it had ****hot brakes with the original 10" single line non-servo system but they're now almost up to disc brake performance

oh and don't forget to use good quality shoes

^^^^ What Pete says, with 11" drums and Mintex linings I have never been short on braking. They are a bugger when dunked in a pond though.

Thanks for replies guys, what is involved putting in 11" brake, it can't be just a case of a straight swap.
I think I have the cut out so will just try finding the full kit out of series 3
Pics would be good. It was 4 years since subject was brought up and there too many rebuilds to go through with the hope of finding something

if your wing has the cutout the pedal box with servo will drop straight in

the 11" backplates are a direct swap for the 10" ones, the only thing is the holes in the backplate are drilled in a different position, so instead of the slave cylinders sitting at 12 o'clock they sit at 11 and 1 respectively

so it's a case of unbolt the bits you don't want and just bolt in the new bits, bleed them and adjust them up

for road use i found them to be great

i didn't take any pictures of my conversion and i'm not pulling it apart just to take some. sorry
