I will be pimping myself out on street corners to get the cash for a galv chassis, may take a while unfortunately.

My funds will never get me that far, just scraping enough for a galv bulkhead, will be selling my left arm for that cash so if you could give us a hand fitting it :D
 
The plank of wood is some good peace of mind. I have had my engine stand assembled for months but the engine is still sitting on a pallet because i'm too scared to mount the bloody thing. I must make myself an extra timber support to go from the legs of the stand to the engine mounts. Then I might have the nerve to get on with it.

There's no way its going anywhere, but since its only a 3 wheeler (got it free so no complaining) it does wobble... If i wobble it, the engine is still at its heaviest so will get better when its being stripped. Me and the old man got it on 2 wheels moving it as it doesnt roll well :oops: but with the wooden chock itll keep me confident when wrenching away at the thing. At the college i did a years course at they had loads of engines on 3 wheelers, and they got slung around without a care and taken apart and put together every day with no issues at all, but i will be wearing my steel toe caps still from now on (dropped the crane's hydraulic ram on my toe earlier in the week) :(
 
Need advice here, ive been grinding away the rust at the back of the chassis and more and more rot is showing itself :( with so many naff weld patches already having been done, and so many needing doing, is it worth biting the bullet and buying a large rear section of the chassis? Paddocks for example have the rear 1/4 for 250 quid, which is a pain as am trying to save as much as possible but the chassis needing saving wasnt good before the rust got to it, any thoughts needed :)

Basically anything behind the gearbox X members is nasty, the front is golden, oil leaks do serve a purpose :D sorry for dark pictures the sun gave up on me, do i splash out a little more or just give me and my welder a harder time?
 
When I started the welding on my chassis I began at the back, stripped a bit, welded it up, primed it and moved on. Looking back this was a really stupid way of doing it. I wish I had bought a full chassis really but failing that I should have bought big replacement chunks and spliced them in in one go. Would have saved ages.

Ive bought the half chassis, a front dumbiron, and the middle cross member with the proper hole in it, making 400 quid for a hopefully great condition chassis, with all trouble areas totally eliminated, rustproofed for as long the thing would be on it anyway. I wasnt drawn to a galv job at this point, not enough money and not worth it for my particular project, so in my eyes i'm saving a grand or so :D
 
Sounds like an excellent plan to me. It will end up really solid and you will know that it will go back together ok. I will keep watching.
 
Front arm and middle x-member showed up today, reckon half chassis will get here tomorrow so can get cutting over the weekend :) fedex been a tad slow

You've done the right thing getting a rear half chassis. The rear cross member has a tendency to rot. It's badly designed and collect's all the road crud inside the open section. Once painted give it a good dose of waxoyl or equivalent. This is a great thread.

Yeah I stood on it yesterday to see how tough it was and it bent slightly... Dont thinks it original either, the whole rear half is pretty much unoriginal. Ive planned Red oxide etch primer with a topping of either silver paint or tinted raptor, for some serious durability i hope.. thanks appreciate it :)
 
Right, 2 weeks later the half chassis still isnt here because fedex damaged it near me and sent it all the way back without letting me know and didnt wanna mention anything about it, so a fresh one is one its way! How they managed to damage a solid steel frame is beyond me :D

Must admit its not your typical amazon kindle delivery package, but still coulda let me know :( been waiting around twiddling thumbs, so am going to look at a discovery tomorrow in the mean time! :D
 
Hi all, no updates lately, my 1/2 chassis has arrived the other day but it arrived in the same 15 minutes as my new discovery, which has some bits need doing as my daily so once the worst of that is out the way i will get back to it again! :)
 
Wish my chassie was that good wen I started but I've welded mine up as going for a galvanised one next year hopefully

Yeah wish my rear 1/2 was like the front, looks like some good grinding work! Galvies are the dream i just cant afford em, but you know itll never need work ever again!
