Series 3 Series 3 1972 Restore

Need some advice! Very long time since any updates and progress, been busy with holidays and summer stuff and am now very planned out and motivated after the weekend at LRO show. All thats left before the bare chassis is cleaned up is the engine and gearbox and odd bits. Does anyone have any advice on whether i should take out engine and gearbox sepearately or both at the same time for now? I plan to just give those 2 a clean off and paint for now so should i get a cheap stand? Leave em on a crane? Or just set em down on some blocks or something which could be a pain... i have a crane but its not strictly mine so i dunno how well it works and needs assembling any info would be fantastic! :)

I'd definitely take then out together in one go. The chances of damaging the input shaft on the engine is vastly reduced!

The reassurance i needed! Dont think i will be touching any clutch or affording any gearbox work anytime soon so an exterior clean up will be fine, i can do basic engine maintenance whether its out or in later on in project. But leaving the geabox on will give me the issue of how to store/work on it whilst i do the chassis... :S
 
I would split them as it will be worth checking condition of clutch while you have easy access and pair is very heavy for the engine crane.

Good idea, if i was to split them then would it be easiest doing that in the truck or after ive pulled them out, i would say out at first guess as stretch says, dont wanna be daft and not protect my shaft
 
You definitely must protect your shaft! Always a good policy.
I took the engine out first then the gearbox. Then nicked some pallets, got some cheap casters and made some trolleys to keep everything mobile.
Then at least you can shift things out of the way if you need to.
You could also check the oil seal on the back of the crank as they are notorious sods.
 
As above - "borrowed" pallets with casters on are a great device to move stuff around on - and we have a forklift - so its a double wammy - can fork "it" to anywhere, and then wheel it the last bit.... turn it round etc., etc.....

Easy enough to make a pallet with blocks on in the appropriate place to support the whole lot - or one for each lump.
 
So in your stables they don't breed horses they breed engine stands? I'm not sure if the margins are so good with engine stand breeding but I might be wrong...

Being a farmer in the fens all kinds of mutated things are bred, look closely and you can see my panels are breeding too, pic took a while to go up
 
Well I hope you haven't got a special mutation with out the securing pin for the swivel on the engine stand...

...that might prove interesting
 
This is a great thread. Your doing well. Nice safari hard top, a rarish item. Definitely split the box and do the clutch...and check the main bearing oil seal too whilst out. Any ideas on final colour; classic or bespoke?

Thanks John! Yes im gonna get to all of those things you mention, hopefully have the injun out today. Ive discovered some terrible things while pondering at it last night which i will post later! Im going for the original marine blue, its the 1st colour the landy was underneath the naff green paint thatd been put on! Speaking to the couple from carrestorationpaints.co.uk at the LRO Show and he will sort me out with my paints when i finally reach that stage! Yeah i love the safari roof, dont know how to restore the underside of it yet though? :)
 
Just prepping for engine removal hopefully done today, the first of nasty discoveries is that the bell housing bolts are barely finger tight, and some arent even all the way home :confused: which is worrying! On top of that, the gearbox output oil seal is well gone, due to the handbrake drum being covered in oil, and a puddle beneath. Wont worry bout that yet, got an injun to pull
