Tappit rattling usually goes away once the engine has warmed up ie about 4 miles at 30 - 40 mph. If you’re doing this static it’ll take quite a while to get the core of the engine at temperature. As posted if it ain’t broke.

It is obviously not right,i am asking for advice as it is bad,ie it frightens animals,it is louder than anybody could put up with,as it happens there is a rotted out pre computer toyota 4x4 here with a good diesel in it which i was offered gratis as a donor engine but i am would rather fix mine as it starts first time every time on its original engine,no other issues but the noise.
I personally dont go for neglecting problems,i have found that they tend to grow and multiply,it also keeps me busy so any advice as to how to fix this or pointers to help fix it is most welcome,

Seems to me you have to determine whether its inside or outside the engine before you go any further.
If its inside then you are looking to separate bottom end/little ends (load), piston slap, rockers (no load)
Is it only in time with the engine?
What happens if you take the fan belt off?
What happens if you take the engine oil filler off?
Vary with load or not?
Louder when revving up or on overrun?
You get the idea.

Thanks for those pointers
I will disconnect the alternator and fan tomorrow and get my listening stick on the front area,it does seem to come from the heater valve area but opening and closing that made no difference, choke on or off makes no difference,it sounds quite a bit like a very rough diesel, not far off a stationary steam engine,i drove yesterday for 1/2 an hour so it was up to temperature,no difference to noise,
If we were in normal times i would take it to my local mot garage who's owner is a long time land rover owner for a listen and advice,we arranged last year for him to check it over for me when the brakes and things were done and if he was satisfied it was right to give it a mot it and take off the dangerous status of its last mot, when we get back to normal thats my plan even tho it's exempt, the more i can do tho,the more i can keep busy,i am enjoying doing the work,
The dog runs off when its started and will not get into it due to the noise,

The mud shields protecting the foot wells can become loose due to corrosion. I have this problem, when the engine is running, they clatter. If you lean on the wing to look for the problem, the tension caused by your weight stops the vibration on that side. I've used lollipop sticks wedged into the gap to shut the bloody thing up.

Is the exhaust gasket blowing or even the head gasket.
Check the condition of the fan belt.
When you had the rocker cover off did you look at the inside of the cover , the rocker ends are known to hit the cover if the head has been skimmed a significant amount.
If you put some rags around to catch oil you can run it without the rocker cover on for a while.
With the engine running is it smooth and whats the exhaust gas like ie oily or clear.
Can you do a short video of it running and upload to youtube so you can share it here.

Something around the timing chain housing perhaps if it’s coming from that area? That’s a semi difficult job to dismantle and inspect. Do you have a workshop manual?

Good evening,i hope all are well,

It has a nasty clacking noise from the top front, this has been present for several years apparently, various causes have been suggested, pushrods, broken spring, loose tappet etc, today i removed the rocker cover rather hoping for one of those, unfortunately it all seems good,1 or 2 tappets slightly loose and the same tight,i adjusted correctly and the same noise,i have listened with a screwdriver to all areas of the running engine except very near to the fan,the engine.sounds nice,in fact the whirring and rumbling is on the good side,i have had honda bikes (750-4)that have made more, the clacking seems to be resonating from the inner wings as it seems to come from the opposite side of wherever i stand, near the heater gubbins above the fan is loudest but also noticable at the rocker breather,
any suggestions or advice would be very welcome,
All the best,

Disconnect the fan belt and run it. See if the noise stops

Have you tried slacking off each injector nut in turn with engine running , may point to noisy injector
A frequency analyser might. Help or count the taps in 15 secs At tickover and then perhaps work out If it’s cam or crank related

It sounds very cam related.

So, reset push rods, redo valve clearances. Cheap.

Side covers off and check cam lobes. Hassle, but cheap.

Timing chest off, check tensioner, and chain. Bigger hassle.

Head off and check can followers. Big hassle and cost of gasket.

It's a petrol, or I'd consider hot spots.
