What security devices did you have fitted AT THE TIME YOUR LANDY WAS STOLEN?

I think we're missing an opportunity here. I'm sure the LZ collective wisdom could produce the ultimate landy immobiliser. Just imagine the marketing strategy:

With the Dr Evil Landy Immobiliser - you'll never get it going!!

Mines got a great one at the moment.

Take the handbrake off and the engine cuts out (bad earth).

Though it did get me thinking, I wonder if somthing similar could be fitted in to prevent theft make it look like engine trouble.

Like taking the handbreak off, though not the best since you can drive on it. Maybe theres somthing here!

Get it sorted before your landy goes up in flames.. Mate had a disco that was usuing the handbrake cable as an earth lead. I spent a full day cutting out the burnt wiring and splicing in new ones.

It would be good to get some weighting behind the stats, as it seems pretty random.

An anonymous poll of what we all have fitted would achieve this by comparing percentages.

For example these are percentages of vehicles actually stolen (made up stats):

60% have no extra
20% use a steering lock
15% have an engine kill switch
5% have two devises fitted

But a poll of what security our forum users have, reveals (again, made up):

40% have none
40% have a two devises fitted
10% have a steering lock
10% have engine kill switch

So according to this made up poll, you'd be daft having nothing, and very wise have two. Obvious you may say, but a real poll is likely to reveal one type of devise (eg Disklok or ClutchClaw) is better than the other etc etc, and just how effective two devises actually is - there might be a very small difference.

What do you guys reckon?

Ive got a Disklok fitted + TD5 immobiliser

Though fitting one of those X-Eng Pedal boxes and dead locks all round.

Ripped off my door handle the other day by accident made me realise how bloody easy it is to break into a defender with standard locks fitted.

Also looking into a fuel cut off.

I know what you are getting at but unfortunately can't see it working to give an accurate image as to what is going on.

Although there have been a few members on here who's landys have been stolen, the majority of people posting are actually first time posters wanting to get the word out AFTER there landy has been nicked.

I understand.

What about a poll of attempted thefts - that might give a better picture of what devices are more effective than others?

Just a thought - ultimately we all know that if they want it badly enough they will take it one way or another!

do you know where the earth is as mine was doing that, but stopped, now the earth on the main lights are showing signs of "burnt"

My locks are a bit shagged, so will look into these dead locks.

Just bought the X- Eng column lock thingy and awaiting its arrival...

The problem is that you have to rely on the ability of people to be able to read. Once someone posts on a poll it cannot be retracted and even if we use our superpowers to alter the figures we can't alter the percenrage ratios. loads of people posted incorrectly on the security devices poll and unfortunately it has corrupted the results.:(

Very true!!!

If I had a pound for every time someone subscribed to our jobs email and wanted the news - well i'd have bought a few more toys for the landy this week!

At the end of the day there is no way you can stop the pro's completely, beavertails, hi-ab equipped flatbeds, removal vans and winches bypass pretty much everything.

The only thing that your uber expensive devices stop is the opportunists but that doesn't stop them smashing stuff up in an attempt to bypass whatever steps you took.

I'm fortunate, mines not visible from the road and we have a perimeter security system and CCTV so you can't get near it without me knowing. I never park in obscure places, I always seek out the very public places, try to avoid the car being in a predictable place / time, try to use height restricted places, just finding ways to make somebody else the easier target.

On the hiab issue tilt sensor alarms would be a decent deterrent.

What I did wonder and it may well be stupid is how difficult would be to modifiy the car to use modern Range Rover/Disco 3/4 keys? If its even worth doing..

Much like the alarm issue, they're OK but at the end of the day how many would take any notice. The noise saying "look somebody is stealing a car" is more likely to make people walk the other way and cops won't respond to car alarms only reported thefts.

Would you be brave enough (or dumb enough) to tackle three or four pikey types jacking a car? I'd like to bet that it is very rarely a single individual involved. There is the 'jacking' team too that simply wait for you to come back to the car with the keys, wait until you remove everything then bop ...

Park it in a place where getting a big enough tow or hoist vehicle close is hard or impossible, turn the wheels all one way and engage the cars steering lock (prevents easy winching) and leaving in a mega public place is the best prevention - but it ain't a cure - but if it makes them select somebody else's 'easier target' then I can live with that.

I heard a noise outside at one night and went to the window to investigate (above car on drive) as I was still up, and despite our bedroom light being on, a pair of scrotes were pushing my golf off the drive!!

I let a out a few obscenities and threw some clothes on, but they legged - so you never know - they may be able to handle themselves, and be odds on favorites, but equally, they don't want to get caught red handed!

Regarding alarms: i'd never fit one in the hope someone else took notice, but for my own benefit.
